2/27/11 REPORTS: KS/OK/MO

I was up near the Oklahoma Kansas Border east of Cedar Vale. These are video grabs. The storm made several attempts to drop again but I did not see that from my vantage. I did encounter hail which finally caused some dents in my Ridgeline. Some hail was 1.5 to 2 inches.

I had more shot I wanted to share with everyone. Shot just west of Newkirk, OK...

Made the trip from Topeka, KS hoping for a cell to develop before sunset, was worried on the way down because of the dense fog that didn't break until just north of the Oklahoma border at 1 pm. Saw the cells pop on radar in Western OK and intercepted the same cell everybody else was on near Jet, OK. We then followed it northeast to Newkirk, OK, but fell behind because of the roads and the fast storm motion. I did get a few nice shots and a short time lapse as the storm moved east at 50-55 mph.

Drove from Manhattan through Topeka KS to grab my chase partner and then headed south, again landed on the same Grainola OK cell as everybody else.

We had a good lead on the storm initially and then fell behind due to the crowd of people. Running into locals driving their eco cars on post-precip soaked dirt roads slowed us way down, needless to say my 4x4 got a workout.

Here's some video we shot, a screen capture of the tornado from a distance to the West and a few pictures I took of the supercell prior to producing a tornado.

Shot some video after sunset near Sedan, KS of the long-tracked supercell that many captured in Northern, OK, and in Southern, KS.

We were on the N OK Supercell from shortly after initiation until we fell behind like many of you. Congrats to everyone who got the tornado! Here's a few of my pictures from the day. What a great day to test everything out and grease the wheels for this season!

Randy Cooper and I teamed up to chase this event to save on gas. Our target was west Oklahoma on the dryline play. On the way down we caught a nice severe storm in Wichta which produced quarter size hail. After that we headed to our target just west of I35. Meet up with the storm and followed it into indian reservation terrority and just ran out of road options. We saw the breif tornado near Grainola, OK and got some video of it. However the contrast was pretty bad so its alittle difficult to make out. In the video we did not stop to film the tornado thinking we could still catch up to it, but soon found that we did not roads to take. Here is a video of our chase: Watch video >

Eric B'Hymer and myself were kinda late for the show on this one but it turned out very well for us. This was our vantage point of the tornado near Grainola (Bar) OK. We were about a mile or so south of Darin and company on SR-15. Watch video >

Here's the video that Darin Bruin, Jordan Wrecke and I got north of Grainola right on the OK/KS border (the fence line in the timelapse is the OK/KS state line). I had the contrast and saturation set too high but I'm pretty happy with how the timelapse turned out.

Atmosphere was capped tight in AR, SEMO area. Only play we had was QLCS line approaching STL area. Made trip approaching Metro area on I-64. Storms looked very good approaching city with rotation being observed on GR3 on all 4 SRV scans. Stopped in Fairview Heights to plot intercept near Collinsville area. Made our way to near 255 loop to at least get into some winds and stay ESE of tornadic portion of the storm. Storm was caught on video approaching 255. A still was found on Ann Hills web cam of Tornado in Granite City. First catch of year. We intercepted the more linear part as storm that produced tornado cycled to produce another Tornado in Troy. We stayed due south of it approx 3 miles SE of Pontoon Beach. Any meso or funnel was obscured by precip at that time. Power flashes were observed W And just SW of our location entering I-255 N. Reported pea size hail and 70 mph winds to NWS STL. The still of tornado is below. Chase team "When Sky Meets Earth" Ann Hill {Video still} Hailey Hill, Myself, Cheryl Askew, Shawn Gossman, Katelyn Pfeister, Amanda Bridges.

Finally got my chase account up from this day! (Sorry I'm so behind, I've been working on a number of projects) We were on the same storm as most everyone from near Deer Creek, OK along SR-11 until sundown on the Kansas border. Not much point in re-hashing whats already been said so I'll simply post an image and a link to my report. A couple of videos and more images are included there. Overall, a great chase day for February!
