One our customers was home sleeping when the tornado hit his house in Vichy MO...where the EF-1 hit. He said they woke up when they heard the rain and hail. He said then things got real quiet. In about 2 mins. he said the wind just roared up and the tornado blasted in. The way he described things, it sounded like a classic supercell & open hook scenario.

Arkansas Tornado Death

News media reports say that the man who was killed near Appleton, AR, on the morning of January 8th (around 8:40 am CST) was asleep at the time. He was a Corps of Engineers employee who worked at night.

This means that 6 out of our last 7 tornado fatalities in Arkansas have occurred when people were asleep.

This really claahes with the statistic that most people get their warnings via TV. As I tend to say, "Once you turn the TV off and go to bed, the person on TV is not going to tell you anything else." I don't think I really need to make a shameless plug for NOAA Weather Radio here.
