The Phoenix metro area was subjected to a phenominal dust storm around 5:20 PM on 9/11/08. The storm eventually encompassed the entire metro area.
The dust storm was generated by decaying/collapsing severe storms to the southwest of the metro.
Visibility went quickly from 10 miles to a constant 100 ft - 1/8 mile. In a few instances, I couldn't see 20 feet in front of my car. Here's a couple pics I snapped with my cell phone.
Also: a link to a short youtube video, again taken on my cell phone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuncYH9pSok
