The Phoenix metro area was subjected to a phenominal dust storm around 5:20 PM on 9/11/08. The storm eventually encompassed the entire metro area.

The dust storm was generated by decaying/collapsing severe storms to the southwest of the metro.

Visibility went quickly from 10 miles to a constant 100 ft - 1/8 mile. In a few instances, I couldn't see 20 feet in front of my car. Here's a couple pics I snapped with my cell phone.

Hi Ed, I'm in Scottsdale. I was out getting gas (or trying to) when it hit. Visibility was down to about 30 ft. I had to go to 3 different stations before I found one that had power. There were small branches down on Hayden Rd. so. of Indian School. I got NO rain at all, just the blowing dust.
