Shortwaves at 500 mb

What does a short wave do in the upper atmosphere to help initiate storms? Difluence at the 500 mb level sort of makes sense to me. How does a shortwave induce upward motion?

Jeff Haby has a great page on this. The lift and subsidence areas are correlated to the “quadrants” of a jet max (left, right, entrance/exit regions).
