Vorticity

Jul 21, 2014 - 9:06 PM - by Caleb Routt
So I get that streamwise vorticity is the best for tornado development but why is it when you have crosswise vorticity there still can be strong tornadoes? So does it really matter which type of vorticity there is?

SPC has a fairly high prob of wind damage for portions of New York and an increased tornado risk. Capes look low this morning, low . Sun should warm some portions of New York and increase instability. Lapse rates for the low and mid levels are faily low though. Winds aloft are fairly strong. SPC maybe overdoing it.

Live Streaming- Is it worth it?

I've been thinking about buying a GoPro or two for next year and live-streaming to try and make some side cash. I have a few questions for those of you who have experience with it.

1. Is it worth the trouble? I know it's around 55-100 per year for a membership to Severe Studios and maybe another 100 for software. Not to mention the money you spend on the GoPros. I imagine it's a hassle to keep it going during a chase day.

2. How much money can you actually make?... [Read More]

Oklahoma Inventors Create Innovative 'Tornado Lifejacket'

Not sure if this is a good idea.

The majority of tornado-related deaths are from head or crushing injuries. It might be better to supply helmets. My biggest fear is that too much time will be wasted putting on these jackets instead of seeking substantial shelter. All schools in tornado prime areas should have some form of shelter.

Given the jackets / blankets cost 1k each, for a school of 200 students that's 200k. That kind of money would go a long way to... [Read More]

Questions about CAPE and other meteorological questions.

Jul 20, 2014 - 8:43 PM - by Raymond Mason
For a while now I have been trying to learn how to forecast severe weather. So what I did was use a radar program along with Twister Data to try and figure this out (I don't look at national weather service forecasts or weather channel since I want to learn to do this myself.) I know CAPE stands for Convective Available Potential Energy. The higher the CAPE the more potential for severe weather. Today when I looked on Twister Data I noticed a large area from the bottom of Texas all the way up... [Read More]
