El Nino years vs. El Nina years

Dec 20, 2014 - 8:11 PM - by Brian R
Good evening, and happy holidays to everyone!

I have been talking to a few people and I am not sure but from what I am hearing is we are headed into an El Nino year for 2015 and from what people are saying that should equal a much more active severe storm season than 2014 was. Wondering if there is any truth to these comments or not..... is an El Nino year known for having a more active spring and summer for severe weather or not. Hopefully 2015 will be more active than2014 was.

I am looking for photos of full cumuloform pre-tornadic or currently producing

Dec 19, 2014 - 12:33 AM - by calvinkaskey
I am curious if a visual of the cumulus form of later or currently producing tornadic thunderstorms can foretell tornadic activity through shape and texture of the cloud as a whole. For example it seemed like this tornadic supercell was rotating at the top, and exploding linearly from top to bottom with some exceptionally bulging "impulses"... [Read More]

In 2010 after my first Great Plains chase, I spent a lot of time going through my photos and working to improve my understanding of storm structure. For one of those exercises, I attempted to diagram the Bowdle supercell. There was a lot of excellent feedback and discussion on all the structure in that beautiful, terrible, amazing storm.

Each new supercell I chase... [Read More]

Not the canary in the coalmine, but a golden-winged-warbler flying away from storms.

Dec 19, 2014 - 12:51 PM - by Jason Harris
Check this out:
__
A recent storm in eastern Tennessee led to 84 tornadoes and killed 35 people, but the golden-winged warblers left in time to fly to safety. Researchers discovered the birds' supernatural capabilities by accident — they were testing whether the warblers could carry geolocators on their backs.
[ . . .]
Before the storm hit, the birds left Tennessee's Cumberland Mountains, migrating an astonishing 400 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. They escaped more... [Read More]

Why Not Balloons?

I read an article today about better understanding tornadoes by penetrating them with scientific instruments attached to $30-50k drones. The article is entitled "Drones might help explain how tornadoes form" and can be found here.

I'm really curious as to why rarely anyone considers the weather balloon as a viable way to deliver instruments near to or into a tornado.... [Read More]
