The meteorology of tornado forecasting

Jan 22, 2015 - 1:26 PM - by Rich Thompson
With the help of the OU Student Chapter of the AMS, I will be conducting a 9-week workshop on tornado forecasting, beginning the evening of Tuesday 3 February 2015 and running through Tuesday 21 April 2015 at the National Weather Center in Norman, OK. Each session will start ~7:30pm and will run about 90 minutes (with a short break). Topics:

1. 2/3 Weather maps, soundings, and synoptic meteorology
2. 2/10 Severe storm ingredients: moisture and lapse rate sources

Tornado's winds aloft

Jan 25, 2015 - 1:46 AM - by Caleb Routt
So I get that because of friction a tornado's wind speeds are slower at the ground. But shouldnt a tornado's winds at the surface be stronger because there is really deep low pressure inside the eye? For example if a tornado encounters friction there isnt enough flow around the low so the pressure must drop even more. My question is why are the greatest winds inside the vortex a little above the surface and how does it affect the winds at the surface?

NEW/UPDATED WEATHER SITES

This time of year I'm going through my chasedata site and adding new links and getting rid of old ones. I love to browse the internet for new sites that I can use. I came across an SPC HRRR Model Browser site that I've never seen before. I also like to look for newer precip/reflectivity, satellite and surface data sites that I can use for chase season. Have any of you guys stumbled upon newer/updated sites that you liked?

The Internet of Things is basically a brave new world concept for crazy ideas like connecting your Refrigerator to the Internet so you know how much it's costing you or to let you know when somethings needs work. En Masse manufacturers can collect realtime failure data and respond to them proactively. Improve energy efficiency of future models based on real world data sets. Track regional habits of consumers. In the not so distant future your fridge might tell you what you are low on, let you... [Read More]

Moore Debris Wall

I grew concerned that it was another "stop the tornado from hitting here" deal but its something that's a little bit less ridiculous. Seems the city of Moore is proposing this to prevent debris from piling up or something of that nature. I'm not sure what the actual benefits this will really even have, because I can't come up with any.
