This may be a bit late, posting this now in the educational thread during springtime...but it may be of help to those who are new here in the future. ...I was just doing a bit of 'leisurely research' of terms that I've come across over the past 6 months here on ST that others use with abandon yet assume everyone knows what they mean.
One of those terms is "SDS". I've seen it used multiple times over the winter by multiple users, but without any real explanation or definition for this anacronym. It's kind of like "you're supposed to know what that is without ever being told" sort of thing.

I filed this term away a few weeks back, when it was discussed on the live chat, and we came up with an ad-hoc definition (that I can't recall because I didn't write it down). But now, I came across the acronym again today, reading another post, and here is the definition given in this link

for "SDS".

All that to ask: Do you have another definition for this anacronym ("SDS")?

"Storm Deprivation Syndrome"

I think I recall the term for me first popping up around 2003 and was coined for Storm Deprivation Syndrome

I think like any syndrome, there are varying degrees, but overall the way I remember it being used was for the period between the end of tropical season and the beginning of storm chase season (roughly November through March). I'm sure looking into threads of those months as far back as ST goes might reveal some clarity, or common usage. But of course it is all in good fun, and I'm sure no one is upset if someone bends it, or changes it to meet their conditions or joke as the situation changes. I know for years I've seen some use that exact acronym for different things including even Snow Deprivation Syndrome. Also have noticed different letters added, or substituted such as Hurricane Deprivation Syndrome.

Thanks for dredging that up from the depths of the 1997 internet. It was very educational and a worthwhile read. Obviously not a new condition. The official defiinition of "SDS" appears to be "Supercell Deprivation Syndrome" then.

I think that article should be included in the basic storm chasing class on Spotter Network, IMHO, especially because of the in-depth research used to define it and the encouraging findings from the treatment strategies used to help those afflicted.

On the side, I noticed the date..that article was written just 4 days after I purchased my first desktop PC from Gateway 2000 for around $3500 --upgraded to all the best stuff available, including the "massive" 2.5 GB hard drive. That PC lasted me 10 years, and was still working fine. I only upgraded because the technology was very outdated after 10 years, and the 50K dial-up modem just wasn't cutting it anymore.

Ah, yes Steve Miller's (TX) good ol' SDS page... good stuff!

It was originally coined as supercell deprivation syndrome which would obviously only include storms that rotate. The term has been used more widely in recent years to include storm deprivation syndrome, in which a chaser is suffering from a lack of storms... not just the supercell kind, this would include ANY type of storm (linear, garden bird fart variety, etc).

So I use either term... right now I have storm deprivation syndrome because I have not heard thunder yet this spring. Once that is achieved, it will become supercell deprivation syndrome until I get something in the alley LOL.
