Any of you keeping busy during the winter season? Between freezing fog and optical phenomena, ND has provided some decent photographic opportunities as of late (if you're willing to get your hands cold). Anyone that can direct me to a thin glove that allows me to operate camera controls AND keep my fingers warm gets a cookie.

Those are some very impresive sundogs.

Only thing I have so far is the dense fog we had last week here in Wisconsin.

Great pictures there Aaron, we've had a lot of that dense fog here in Iowa too. Did have one day of sundogs, but they weren't terribly impressive; and had plenty of freezing fog that coated things up.

If you are looking for some gloves for the warm weather, a photographer friend of mine has these and he enjoys them for this Iowa weather. So they should at least help you out up there in Nord Dakota: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/98678-REG/Lowepro_20720_Photographer_s_Gloves_X_Large_.html

Yes, the frost in Grand Forks has been phenomenal this week. Cold hands? Just wait until later this week. Gotta love those -30F 2m temps on the GFS.

I have never seen frost/rime this thick. It was generally over an inch thick and some spots were closer to two inches.

Very cool pics guys! I'll throw a few out there too I guess.

Here's a few deer running out of the woods right in front of me.

I thought this was kind of a cool winter scene up near Galena Illinois.

Last January I was surprised to look out and see robins in the snow!

What beautiful pictures! I don't see much of that here in Phoenix, Arizona. Lots of palm trees though. I got a tan yesterday while having lunch with a friend. It has been in the 70s, not a trace of ice or snow. I do miss the winter scenes...

The west coast storm of Jan 3-6 left many feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada, and about a foot in Yosemite Valley. I headed up there right after the storm broke.

Gloves and Winter

For gloves, check your local hardware store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) Check around the tool section and the landscaping section. You can usually find an array of gloves, and very close to the one listed in the B&H link below. I prefer the ones with cut finger tips, or I just cut them myself.

As far as my winter photography and more, check out the link below

Jason that is fantastic!! Wawona lookout in the wintertime. Half Dome looks awesome in the distance. I hiked to the top once with the cables. You make me want to go back there and do that again. Was Bridalveil frozen over? I don't see it. Your pictures are magazine-worthy.

Doug your fog pictures are inspiring too, gorgeous.

And so is all the beautiful ice you guys are shooting!

Thanks Susan! It was such a beautiful scene, all of Yosemite Valley in the snow. Bridalveil Falls was still flowing, but it was really low. Every once in a while you could hear the crack of the ice falling off of both Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil. It sounded like thunder. This is definitely the time to visit Yosemite...not crowded, lodging is cheaper, and the photo ops are endless.

-20.7°F this morning so had to get one of the winter Minnesooota traditions out of the way. If you have never seen it, this is what about 2 cups of boiling water does when it hits the air. Not quite the same as the corny Twister quote "And he chucks the bottle into the twister, and it never hits the ground.", but this never comes down either.

Nice pictures everybody, I got a few shots back in early December when we had 8" of snow and some wild frost.

And more recently some brilliant sundogs and moondog & light pillars.

I have some good video of two pots of boiling water in 10-13F, Bill. I'll have to post it to youtube. It's 3F right now so I might do it again this morning!
