hey guys, i have a davis wizzard III i have the big cups and i just found out theres small cups that you can use to, im going to move out to south dakota and the small cups are made for hurricanes and wind storms, does anyone know the diff between the big cups and small cups and what i should use?

Forrest, for your own good, try to break your posts down into more than one sentence. Also, there's a search feature on the top of your user tool bar. There have been numerous threads about anemometer cups and I'm almost positive that they can help you.

Forest,

To give you an answer that you can use, I don't think the size of the cups really matter. I've had an anemometer with big cups, I've had one with small cups and they both got the job done. As long as it gets the job done that's all that matters.

Yeah that would be your best bet. I have a wireless La Cross weather station and the cups on it are very small compared to the cups on my Inspeed anemometer. It may have something to do with the design of the unit to, but not sure.

Save up and buy an RM Young and you are good to go. But then again, unless you are an electronics wizard, you'll also have to buy their data logger and/or Wind Tracker to see what the wind is...very expensive but scientifically worth it.

However, you have to start somewhere and Davis is good stuff...

I have used the Davis now for 2 season. I had the big cups first. The forward winds speed of driving ended up breaking them all the time. I switched to the smaller ones and no longer having that problem. I do break about 3 sets every season due to hail though. Which is the SOLE reason I don't go with an RM Young. It's much easier to stomach replacing a $30 set of cups than a MUCH more expensive anemometer, and for my uses, RM Young would be overkill.

I have a davis station. My cups have survived up to winds measuring 120+ mph. However sustained winds over 70 mph for over 15 mins or so seem to cause the cups to break. So i remove them when going on the Interstate. I havent yet tested them in a hurricane yet.

One thing to note on the Davis Instruments cups is the orientation of the magnet. The cups look ialmost dentical but ive found that the magnet near the center comes in a verticle or horizontal configuration. Horizontal is the style mine uses (complete weather monitor II). I was sent some new cups with the verticle magnet and found that my wind speed read nearly double of what it really was. After calling davis up, we figured out the problem.

I use the vortex storm chaser mag mount through inspeed. Originally I had the same problem with the cups breaking off while driving on the interstate, but they re-designed them to be tougher and so far they have done well. Although I will say this, may God have mercy on your sanity when trying to replace them! That tiny C-clip makes me wanna rip all my hair out!

I too like the fact that it is in-expensive, Ive tested the readings on days with calm winds by driving around and found it to be accurate, and sooner or later I know one will get taken out by hail or other debris.
