Just wanted to let you guys know that WeatherTAP now has Level II Radar data in KML format for loading into Google Earth. These are the same Level II Radar images that are being displayed in RadarLab HD. Each KML file has 6 frames of animation. The file auto-updates the radar data every 5 minutes. There is also a Warnings KML file that can be downloaded as well. WeatherTAP users can get this data here.

Very nice feature although Google Earth is a little too bandwidth intensive for on-the-road use. I would recommend filtering out the <20 dbz data:

I agree about Google Earth being bandwidth intensive and it can be CPU intensive as well. We are currently filtering 10 dBZ and below.

Do you think that there is any chance that this could be expanded to be on or near the same level as GRLevel3? I have a Mac and have to boot up in Vista every time that I have to look at radar. I could cut myself off from Windows completely if I can find a suitable radar program for Mac.

WU looks fantastic! I used it before but I never knew it had the full CONUS map. I'm on my cell phone internet and it's not terrible but zooming around to different areas can take a bit to load.

Weather Underground overlays

Thank you for posting that link. I use Wunderground with my science classes and there is a lot of good stuff. This is a nice added resource that I did not know about. These overlays work for either Mac or PC/Windows.

I just tried to see if it works for my Mac and it does nicely. That also means I can use it for my mac ibook laptop when I take it on the road.

YOu can even zoom in . Still trying to figure how to best use it.

Thanks once again

Check out Weather Underground, they've had it for a while now and will soon be releasing model and satellite overlays. I'm not sure when it will be released, but they also have smoothing in the pipe.

Free too!

Anyone here can use the following code for a free year. If you choose to keep your membership, it's only $10/year.

This will remove the ads and when looking at the NEXRAD sites allows you to go up to 40 frames with various speeds.

One of the features I love the most is the ability to post photos from my phone to my WunderPhotos via email.

If anyone has questions about the site please feel free to send me a PM.

Free 1 year code: 9UFAC

I'd rather use weathertap since it's much better and has no adds unlike weather underground

Have you looked at WeatherScope? That's a nice one for the mac.

Yeah I have used WeatherScope a little in the past. I have not used it in awhile. I will have to fire it up and see how it works.

Well I got GRLevel3 running pretty good in VMware Fusion. I can run it in a unity mode so it looks like a normal Mac app. The only problem is the smoothing. The last version that I had tried this with (1.1.1) had DirectX 9.0 support, but no Model Shading support, so no smoothing (it was grayed out). The new 2.0 beta has Model Shading and smoothing is no longer shaded in, but when I click smoothing, the radar completely disappears. I guess I will wait for the next beta. Un-smoothed GRLevel3 still seems to be to be better than most other options on the market for me.
