Jon Williamson, Jennifer Brindley and I went down to the Lake Michigan shore at Illinois Beach Saturday at dawn to see if we could spot a spout. Within minutes of arriving we saw a slender condensation funnel in the distance to the north. We stayed awhile watching some nearby cells before moving north of Racine, WI to another line. The cells that we had pass nearby failed to produce, but we did catch a distance glimpse of one of the Milwaukee spouts. We fired up a grill on the beach and had some brats and hamburgers to celebrate our first successful spout chase. It would have been nice to have been closer, but it was a great time out on the lake

I tried my hand at spouts yesterday, too, but the Michigan side of the lake was a washout. Light southeasterlies fed into instability well offshore, where water temps were in the mid-60s, considerably warmer than the morning air. A line of low Cu towers was clearly visible west of my position at South Haven, but the clouds were a good 20 or 30 miles out. No way can you see waterspouts from that distance.

Interestingly, the SPC mesoanalysis's non-supercell tornado parameter was crunched up there on the west side of the lake, right where the spouts were spotted.

So I'm still minus any spouts in my life list. I feel kinda like Jeff Daniels in the movie Escanaba in da Moonlight, except instead of being the "buckless Yooper," I'm the spoutless Troll. But it was still nice to get out to the lakeshore, hang out with Nick Nolte, and enjoy the moody September sky. Congrats to Skip, Jennifer, and Jon, and to anyone else over there across the pond who took a scalp or two.
