I came across this quite a while back, but forgot all about it until searching through my emails tonight. This site, while not updated often, shows some pretty "cutting edge" ham radio stuff as you can apply the different technologies...www.73s.org.

One thing I found to be quite a novel idea, though I'm not sure of it's usefulness, is to update your Twitter status via the APRS messaging option. I suppose if cell towers were down, and you can still hit a digipeater, you could use this option. It's a pretty cool idea none the less. Check it out at http://bit.ly/59Ttw
 
It is interesting idea. APRS was orginally designed by Bob Bruniga to be a messaging system more than a position reporting system. Almost no one uses the message side of APRS (well they didn't all the years I used it, but no long do).
