Streaming NOAA weather radio

weatherunderground also provides streams of NOAA weather radio stations.

The streaming nws radio has come in handy as ironicly, the internet signal on the phone is sometimes better than the actual weather radio reception...I imagine it will come to a time when all nws stations are web based as well.

It is 2012 - every NWS should have their audio streaming online. Unfortunately there are many offices that are missing from this list - and the other web-sites online.

Out of all the things NWS should be investing money in - I'm not sure how high up on the list NWR streaming should be? It has no way of alerting and that's really the only value of NWR in the first place (if that.)

I am sure it isn't a priority. All I am saying that in the year 2012 one might expect this to be an option. As much money that has been invested in the NOAA Weather Radio system - an online listening option would be convenient.

Our local NOAA radio feed streams on the TV on a community/local govt. access channel...I doubt it costs them much, if anything, and I doubt it would cost much, if anything, to stream over the internet. It's not entirely about severe weather alerts. Actually, some useful information for mariners with the tides, wave heights, small craft advisories, etc.

Mike - there is a cost in setting it up and keeping the stream (they can't use the normal office Internet due to security issues.)

All that useful information is already available from their webpage, EMWIN, NWWS, etc so it's probably easier to get there than trying to listen through the radio feed?

I belive more feeds would be avaible if the NWS hosted their own streams or allowed others to stream.

Wunderground at the moment is locked into being a sole provider of NWS streams.
They must have some deal worked out.

I have a streaming public saftey scanner feed online with RadioReference.com and we must agree to NOT broadcast NOAA Weather Radio.

Wunderground is NOT a sole provider. You can set it up on your own in about 5 minutes using one of many services.

I've carried a portable scanner radio with me chasing the past few years, and I keep the local NOAA station on as an added resource when on a storm. The downside of this is that mostly I get none to poor signals in rural areas, and the resultant broken/scratchy reception. I'll have to add these links to my 'chasing toolbag' for this next season.

Exactly. Wunderground is simply where everyone does it because they make it quick, easy, and free. All of the streams found there are provided by private users.

From what I have been told, the issue is bandwidth. We would love to put all 8 of our transmitters online but we don't have that authority right now.

If you saw the notice yesterday - NWS offices aren't even allowed to watch streaming chaser video due to the concerns with overload...
