Good day all,

I know it's kind of early, but has anyone here considewred a benefit DVD for "Storms of 2010"?

I do not think any DVD was done for 2009, so maybe that can be included as well. The first things that comes to mind are Yazoo City, MS on Apr 24 and the May 22 in SD.

This has already been a busy season as of June 2010, and these DVD's have been awesome for the past years!

I know we have a rather impressive hurricane forecast as well, so maybe this link will grow as of later in the fall (?).

Just an idea ... How 'bout anyone else?

Just like previous years when the compilation DVDs were done, someone is going to have to take the initiative to actually take on the project and handle all of the PR stuff that goes with it. In my opinion, every year the DVD was done it was always a fantastic finished product with great video, narration, music, etc. The problem: getting to the finished product. It's a lot of work getting there and balancing that with availability seems to be a challenge for many....which is rightfully so considering there are jobs/careers and families that factor into the equation. The most important part to any possibility of a Storms of 2010 DVD is going to be initiative.

The question is....Any takers?

I've always considered being a part of the project, especially after watching a few of the previous. I generally have the time, but it is the resources that are also a consideration for people (and myself) when they become involved. This is especially true when considering the charitable nature of the DVDs.

It's a great thing that the chase community does and the potential is so great. I hope it does catch back on this season. It isn't too early to consider it...especially when the earnings season isn't that far away.

We've had a very photogenic year and it would be a shame not to. I'm fairly decent with FCP so I'd love to help out. It seems that for producing a chapter, you basically just collect footage and stills from multiple chasers and edit it together - is that the gist of it? I should probably try to find an older one to see how it was put together.

Easier said than done...

I would do it in a heart beat but I'm going to be way too busy this summer to take on that responsibility. I might produce a chapter, though.

There will be a 2010 DVD. I believe Johnathan Brouwer is going to do it but I could be wrong. I asked in 2009 if there would be a DVD and I was told no but was told there would be one for 2010. You guys/gals can look for the thread if you want.

Edit: I could not find the thread where Johnathan said there would be a storms of 2010 Charity DVD (he did say that) but here is what Mickey Ptack said after the Storms of 2008 Charity DVD: "The last I heard, Johnathan Brouwer will take over 2009. After I donate the profits generated from 2008 I will be washing my hands clean of the project and handing it off to Johnathan completely. Mick".

I have been considering spearheading the effort once again as in 2004 and 2005. I need to look at my summer/fall schedule and see if I have the time for it. I will make a decision in the next 3 weeks or so since this production would need to be started in early summer in order to make holiday sales deadlines. One thing is for certain, we would need a *great* support team to pull this off beyond just chapter producers, including marketing folks, graphic/artwork design, audio production, etc. I will only do this if there is a serious commitment from the team to kick the production up a notch from years' past with the desire to make the DVD (or Blu-Ray) marketable beyond the level of internet word-of-mouth. And the intent would be once again to donate 100% of the profits to charities that help storm victims.

I don't plan on saying much more about this in the public forums right now, so if you want to converse about this, please use PM.

p.s. A few bonus "2009" chapters would be in order too (e.g., Aurora).

Greetings All.

We are going to do SO 2010! My thought was to pick a few of 09 dates to put in as bonus chapters or at least a review chapter of the 09 year.

As discussed previously, I was more than happy to take over the excellent job Mickey Ptack did with the projects. I always believed that this is a great opportunity for us to come together and help communities effected by severe weather. I also have completed the BEST of StormsOf FIVE disk set which could be released at the same time.

I will work on getting things organized and as details emerge, will post here. As this is our community coming together, I will need some help with many different areas, so think about what you can do to assist on this project.

Sounds like this will have to be a two or three disc set, with people wanting to include 2009 since nobody wanted to mess with it last year and of course the obligatory Hughes tribute, which no doubt will be included.

Greg has it right: selling 500 copies of this isn't worth the effort anymore, because it's been made into a monster. If you can't get a serious backer ($$$$) onboard to sponsor promotion and distribution, it's not worth the effort. And getting a serious backer to fund a 100%-to-charity project seems unlikely.

I think 2009 got it right....just let the SO die peacefully. It had its time and served its purpose, and now it's time to move on. Just one man's opinion.

The biggest thing is good editing and marketing. We know there will be plenty of content. Also timing (as mentioned previously) is key.

How many copies went out in the past? I would think getting a few thousand out wouldn't be that hard. You do have to know what your overhead is going to be before expenses for editing equipment and glass press DVD production is made.

One option to help set off overhead upfront costs is to offer pre-orders. Normally, I wouldn't say that is a good idea, but on a charity type production such as this, it might work. I've never really looked deep into that option though....but my mind has always been "for profit" too on film productions.

I like the idea of a 2 Disc set. We need to include 2009 and we also need to include a chapter to the members who are no longer with us like Eric Flesher. I know for Stormsof2007 we added a chapter for Eric Nyguyen so why can't we do that again for Eric and anyone who recently passed away? You could also add bonus chapters of hurricanes, flooding or blizzards if you wanted to. Just some ideas.

I think the honorary part isn't a bad idea. It is always good to remind people that in addition to the storms...storm chasing is about the people.

Leave winter and tropical weather out of it, or at least in this particular project....sounds like too much to bit off...and scripting would be difficult. My opinion is to keep the theme consistent and focused.

Here is what I will say about the subject. If you want it to happen then you (not the other guy) need to be a part of it and help make it happen. Don't just donate video. Get in there and help anyway that you can.

Whether it be Greg or Johnathan or even the combination of the two heading the project, they will not be able to do it alone. If you can be a part of the operation it makes the project a lot easier on everyone involved.

On the SO2007 project we had a decently sized team that really helped out including Dick McGowen and Darin Bruin whom both really helping us out on Project Greensburg. We had a group who took over the treasury and shipping (I forget the group sorry). Other than the technical issues with the DVDs (which was 100% my fault) that year was really the best of the two years I had when leading the projects. It's that kind of help the leaders will need to make this project the biggest and best.

With the above being said it would be hypocritical of me to not jump in and do what I can to help the new project. Although I have major burn out from the SO2007 project and the SO2008 project fiasco I would still like to be a part of the project in some form or another. So count me in when that time comes.

That's all I will say. Just get in there and do your part to make it happen.

Mickey Ptak - not Ptack ;) Now try to pronounce it lol  :D.
