Snow event in southern Brazil

This is the second snow event this year in southern states of Brazil. It affected a much larger area than the first, with snow being recorded in 3 states and more than 10 cities. Freezing rain has also been registered in some areas.

Yesterday's model discussion by NCEP:
AT LOW LEVELS...A BROAD TROUGH DOMINATES THE FLOW OVER THE
SOUTHERN CONE/SOUTHWEST ATLANTIC. EMBEDDED IN THIS FLOW...A POLAR
FRONT IS TO QUICKLY PULL NORTH ACROSS ARGENTINA TO RIO DE LA
PLATA BASIN BY 24 HRS...AND BY 48 HRS IT IS TO PROPAGATE ACROSS
THE SOUTHERN STATES OF BRAIL...TO THEN WEAKEN AS IT OCCLUDES.
THIS SYSTEM WILL THEN INTERACT WITH A PERTURBATION ON THE
NORTHERN STREAM. THE LATTER CENTERS ON A DEEP OCCLUDED LOW OFF
THE SOUTHERN COAST OF BRASIL...AND IS FORECAST TO RAPIDLY DEEPEN
THROUGH 42-48 HRS. [...]
FURTHERMORE...AS THE SYSTEM OCCLUDES...AND A POLAR RIDGE BUILDS
ACROSS MID SECTIONS OF SOUTH AMERICA...COLD POLAR AIR WILL ADVECT
ACROSS MESOPOTAMIA VALLEY/URUGUAY TO THE SOUTHERN STATES OF
BRASIL. THE INFLOW OF COLD AIR IS LIKELY TO FAVOR SNOW SHOWERS ON
THE SERRA DO MAR ACROSS RIO GRANDE DO SUL IN BRASIL LATE ON DAY
01 AND EARLY ON DAY 02...WITH ACCUMULATION OF 05-10MM/DAY.

Snow is recorded at least once a year in the highest areas of southern states in Brazil. Some memorable cold events caused snow to be registered in a much larger number of cities. Some of the most remarkable were in 1918, 1965, 1985 and 2000. Last year we had only one event, but with a bigger accumulation than this year's.

Had a significant snow event in South Africa late July as well. Seems to be a hemispherewide trend.

Possible snow event could happen in the next week, starting in August 19th with models showing a trend for a strong polar mass. I'll start a new thread as the event aproaches.
