i made a chase report for 6/27/07 for the colorado storm that had a tornado in woodland park area. i placed my report as i was going for the intercept. is there a reason its not listed?

Strange things happening here lately... You can post a photoshopped picture of the moon in the tropical forum, but if someone misinterprets a hail picture in the REPORTS forum you can't talk about it there.

Mabey it has something to do with when ST changed servers in 2006 or early 2007? I thought we lost all of our old data after the move?

i dont think that would be the issue because his report was only 2 days old...

jason, i never saw the report, but you stated that you were on the way to intercept the storm...that might not qualify under post-storm discussions...

you should PM a moderator...and ask him what happened...

(6) When you start a thread, use the following subject format:
date type: geographic area
For example:
3/7/06 REPORTS: TX/OK Panhandle
Dates must be in MM/DD/YY format (the U.S. standard).
Geographic areas must define one or more entire states... (GOOD: OK, AR/TN, Nebraska) (BAD: Gulf Coast, SE U.S.)

If the title format is wrong the post is removed. This is VERY IMPORTANT because the reports area is serving as a historical reference as well that has been building for some years now.

How detailed was the report? I mean, if I spent 2 hours typing a report only to have it deleted because I made a mistake in the subject title, I'd be pissed. Would it be possible for a moderator to edit the title to fix it? It seems deletion should be limited to the posts that are way off base... even then, couldn't it simply be moved to the correct area, and then have the poster warned?

One would think if you spent 2 hours writing a report you could be bothered with putting the proper format in the title right?

Simply putting "06/25 report" or "report TX" just doesn't cut it.

This is really because lately a LOT of posters have REALLY gotten lazy about posting in that area. Lots of comment replies in the REPORTS threads, many posts being put in the wrong place there, like 3rd party reports in the REPORTS forum, or DISC in the FCT threads etc etc etc.

The rules for that area are tight, and it's stated that they are MANDATORY READING, and they are not secret, they are posted there and clearly laid out by Tim. Even in the title of that area it states:

This is a special area of StormTrack that has an additional set of rules. This area is more heavily moderated and strict adherence to the rules for this area is required to maintain the high quality of this area.
It's clear that some people didn't bother reading them given the number of one's that show up there that are not appropriate.

If a poster can't be bothered to read them, why should we be bothered to go and fix it? And that also opens up other problems because if we change anything about a post then we get accused of manipulating peoples posts (yes this has happened).

Simple solution....format it correctly, there is not problem.

I feel like a moron sometimes lol I just noticed that his report was for 07 and not 06 lol another brain fart by me sorry.

ok i missed the topic heading by not putting the right format. it was for a report on my chase on 6/27/07 in colorado. got it now i will post it under the right heading.

Well, if the topic were deleted, perhaps a note to the poster so they don't have to come here asking where it went. Takes two seconds to PM the guy and say hey, we deleted your post because of this this this and this. Just a thought...

I was thinking along the same lines just the other day Tony but didn't want to create any problems. I posted a reply to a FCST thread which was promptly deleted. Never any word as to why. Sort of rude and disrespectful in my opinion.

Personally, I will send up PMs for ~75% of the deletions I make. The only time that I don't send out notices are for "obvious" violations. For example, I don't tend to send out individual PMs for those who post non-reports in REPORTS thread. For some reason, this violation has been very common the past month or so. Another very common violation for which I delete posts and do not typically send out PMs is a "frivolous" post in a NOW thread. Occassionally, someone will make a post in a NOW thread that contains nothing but a "hey, there's a new warning out for **** county!". Again, the vast majority of people following NOW threads are aware of current warnings, trends, etc. As such, we require that people post something more substantial if they want to notifiy others of a warning or watch. At any rate, rules violations such as the two noted above are often very obvious, and they occur with such frequency that it is sometimes not possible to send out individual PMs. We ride the rules for the Target Area forums quite hard, since it's the bread and butter of Stormtrack. The vast majority of deletions, etc, are performed in the Target Area (FCST/NOW/REPORTS/DISC).

Elsewhere, I almost always send a PM if I perform any admin action. As you guys have noted, it's only fair to be told WHY your post was deleted. In addition, I tend to be a little more gracious if a particular post or thread looks like it took a substantial amount of time and effort to make. Heck, I'd be upset if I spent 45 minutes typing a post, only to have it deleted for something minor. With that in mind, I'll tend to move and adjust the post as necessary, following up by sending a PM to the author. Of course, if it's an egregious violation, it will be deleted regardless. In this case, I sometimes copy + paste the post into a PM to the author, since this allows the author to make the necessary changes to the post without having to rewrite the entire thing. Again, we ride the rules for Target Area threads harder than threads in other forums, and there's a reason why the title of the rules page says "Mandatory reading!".

If you have any concerns over a post that seems to have disappeared, feel free to PM one of the moderators. We can undelete posts, and we can view deleted posts. The moderators are only here to help make sure the board functions properly and efficiently, as we all want Stormtrack to be the valuable, informative, and educational asset that it's been for decades.
