• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Hey guys,
I'm putting together a list of Wifi locations to put on my GPS and was hoping everyone could help out. If you know of any Wifi hot spots throughout the plains, could you please post their locations?
Thanks!

I tried this once and didn't get too many responses. My thinking was, people don't want to give up their secret WIFI locations because if they did, others would be there using it instead of themselves. I guess I can sort of understand.

Also in reality, you can find a wifi spot in nearly any location now a days. In my hometown of 400 people I can find 4 seperate locations that have available wifi, nearly any city with a hotel also has wifi available and most will allow you to use it even if you are afraid of the 'wardriving' type accusations and the such...

A list like this probably could have been very useful in previous years, but now with so many households, hotels and businesses going wireless there are wifi spots all over the plains states.

I used to maintain a list, but it became essentially worthless because of the fluidity in the wifi network. For instance, truckstop.net bit the dust, while networks at individual hotels seemed to fluctuate between being open for all, to needing a password for customers.

As Jayson mentioned, there are simply so many wifi networks now, I don't worry about it.

I agree. The town I'm from has 300 people if that, and I know of at least 4 WIFI hotspots. 2 of the 4 are public places.

Agreed, such a project is hard to maintain. There is several online resources though which might be of assistance, including http://www.jiwire.com/ although I don't know how up to date they are.

One thing I used to do was to plot the locations of sites that advertised hotspots such as certain truck stop chains, state rest stops etc. Was only of limited use to me though so I don't bother anymore.

These days simply scanning for hotspots seems to give satisfactory results, especially around "likely" locations like hotels/motels, truck stops or wherever.

If you can find internet like I have in a few of the really small panhandle towns, then you can find it anywhere. I have noticed schools are also another good place to drive by along with the usual hotels and gas stations. I tehter my alltel phone now so its really not a concern unless I am looking for high speed. As you drive into a town just start refreshing the available networks, something will always come up.

A couple of years ago I installed an amplifier and external antenna on my vehicle to access WAPs while I was driving. The amount of open WAPs is pretty incredible actually. I can get e-mail while driving down the highway nowadays in what seems like the middle of nowhere. (I think farmers are surfing while in their combines or something.)

I really recommend this kind of setup rather than trying to find the WAPS and navigate to them. Of course... If you can afford the equipment.

Drive around with netstumbler on you will find dozens of them in the smallest towns and probably near 100 just driving through a main road of a major city. Open wifi is EVERYWHERE.
