April 23, 2007 — NOAA hurricane experts will travel aboard a NOAA WP-3 Orion turboprop Hurricane Hunter in a five-day, five-city tour of the East Coast beginning April 30 to raise public awareness of hurricanes that can threaten the Atlantic Seaboard. They have been doing this for MANY years...

They have been all over the Caribbean and Latin America in the past, even Cuba doing the "public awareness" thing.

Maybe just now, they'll throw in the US East coast since according to global weather / hurricane patterns lately, this area needs to be aware of such, not so much the Spanish Caribbean area anymore.

In a nutshell: More storms have been threatening / affecting the USA recently (aka. 2004-2005).

Hi to all...

Actually they were in San Juan, Puerto Rico last saturday, this time with the WC-130, a separate tour I think but is the very same purpose. Lixion Avila of the NHC and others came aboard the aircraft as far as I know. Every year they come and even some years they've been in Ponce (south coast) rather than San Juan. That time was the P-3 Orion aircraft. Other places visited over the past few days included the Yucatan area (Cozumel if I'm not wrong). So I really don't see much difference from other years because this area always has a high risk of being hit by a huricane no matter which year it is...

You do realize that you are asking them to put in some East Coast stops, in response to the thread that says the Hurricane Hunter is making stops along the East Coast in preparation for the coming season?

I saw them last year in Mobile and it's something that you should check out if you are a true weather weenie

Also, according to their site they make stops on the east coast every orher year. Seems reasonable.

If only they would make some stops on the East Coast!

Ditto on the pics, Jesse. Some great shots, especially of the interior. It's alot smaller in the plane than the pictures actually convey. Everything is pretty jammed up inside with all the equipment and stations for gathering info.

This plane, Kermit, is the one they almost lost penetrating Hugo in 1989. Some of the same crew that was on that mission still fly on "Kermit" today.

The weather that day at the Elizabeth City Coast Guard base was pretty miserable, but it was still an exciting event, especially for alot of school kids that got to tour the plane.

thanx for the comments... it was a bit tight in there for sure... i wanted to talk to some of those about some of the missions they had been on, but just did not get the chance... they were so busy when i went aboard the first time.. had to leave to move my explorer... and talked to a few folks still braving the rain... but when i got back on, they were wasted.. tired and ready to call it a day... they shut it down earlier than expected, but it had been slammed most of the day...

it was good to meet you out there... looks like the season is gonna be a busy one... looks like the gulf may be the place if the analogs are correct...will have to wait and see...
