Stormtrack Facebook broke the news that NBC 5 in DFW now has a mobile dual-pol X band radar, but there is more to the story. NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal that owns 28 NBC and Telemundo local television stations, actually bought 3 of them.

The first was deployed to KACU NBC 10 in Philly: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news...to-Severe-Weather_Philadelphia-388816301.html

The second was deployed to KXAS NBC 5 in DFW: http://www.nbcdfw.com/weather/video...orm-Tracking_Dallas-Fort-Worth-389117851.html

It sounds like the third is being deployed to KNBC in LA. It sounds like these will be driven over wide areas (the DFW one sounds like it will also show up in Chicago. Here are two other stories with more info:

There are a lot of tech details here: http://www.tvnewscheck.com/mobile/index/article/id/96728

While I sure the "why" is for ratings, this is going to be interesting to see the "how" and how other networks/stations react.

Very interesting. I'm curious to see if more of these show up. It would be really cool if while chasing, you could switch your radar source on your GR product over to one of these local products....but that'll probably never happen.
