N.C. Tornado Footage

Interesting how the funnel appeared nearly stationary before it touched down. Great upward motion.

I love the dialogue. Apparently there is a new myth to debunk.

Woman - "Why are you rolling down the windows?"
Man - "To equalize the pressure in the car"

Great video and I agree with Jeff, thats one hell of a myth to debunk. Always thought wind would make it difficult to open a door near a tornado but not differences in air pressure between inside the car and outside of it.

I notice there is quite an intense debate among the You Tube commenters concerning whether the couple should or should not have stayed in the car.

I know "conventional wisdom" holds that they would have been safer getting out of the car and going in a ditch; but wouldn't they then have been MORE in danger from exposure to flying debris?

At least none of the comments I read (I didn't read them all closely, though) recommended taking shelter in an overpass or viaduct... geez, I hope THAT particularly dangerous myth has finally been quashed, or soon will be.

It appears that around 1:33 into the video, the guy nearly causes a serious accident as a car traveling at a high speed sounds like it swerves to miss them pulling back on the road. The woman makes note of the near miss. Just goes to show you that people loose their minds near the action so you need to watch out.

As been said a million times...90% of the danger in chasing is the outside hazards....drivers like this for example. At first I thought someone was trying to say it was from Saturday. I knew it was from early...then I checked the upload time. Ah...OK...it is from last year. Is it even the original owner too...I thought the original was better brightness. Not sure though.

yeah I remember seeing this video last year already... but yes, a very nice footage .... what to do in such situation ? Drive full power into it and yell BACK UP ! This should confuse any tornado... ;-)

There are plenty of threads here... Very few people with actual experience around tornadoes would get out and hit the ditch. That safety measure came from decades ago to address the problem of people getting in their cars specifically for tornado protection.

there was a speaker that came to UNL's severe weather symposium last year, who did a presentation on whether or not you should evacuate your vehicle when a tornado is approaching. He basically said if you can you should try to escape in your car. But if you can't, only leave the car if there is a low lying ditch. Also said if you stay in your car to leave it running so the air bags would deploy if the car started rolling. I suppose the air bags could help, but you'd have to be thrown a certain way, and it would only be on the initial impact when the air bags deploy. after that if the car is still rolling, they wouldn't be of any help
