• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

No more... I am going to through this darn piece of Junk into the garbage!!!

The Magellan explorist..... It is not compatible with windows XP.. They never made a driver compatible for XP but they did for Vista!!!This unit was made before Vista even came out.... All I want to do with it was run it to Spotter network and GRlevel 3... Screw it I am getting Delorme Street Atlas. It will do what I want!

While I'm not a big fan of Magellan products having been dissapointed in the past, I suspect you are wrong regarding compatibility with Windows XP. I found numerous examples on the internet reffering to people connecting eXplorists with Windows XP.

One item that DID seem to crop up though was that people were connecting the cable on the GPS unit UPSIDE DOWN... the tab goes to the top, not bottom. Give that a try.

If you do decide to get a new unit make sure you understand you need the Delorme software that comes with the receiver... there are some software-only version out there.

I tried putting the wire on the other way as well.. Nothing helps, my Computer won't recognize the unit. I tried some directions on magellan site and it did no good.. I can find the driver to DL for vista but not for XP.. You would think you would be able to DL it off the magellan site. I understand how Delorme works with earthgate and software.

That's just it Erik, there is no driver for XP; it should just be recognized. That file on the Magellan site is just an update for Vista so that it can recognized on that platform.. it isn't a "driver" per se.

There's obviously a problem in your case. I had read of several people with exactly the same symptoms you had, and in each case it was the wire that was the problem. Magellan had to have a way for users to upload maps to the unit, not to mention firmware updates... they were not waiting for Vista to do that!

Oh well, hopefully you find a solution that works for you.

Well here is thing.. It will recognize it with no problem when I select file transfer but when I select it to NMEA the computer will recognize that it is a magellan unit but then ask me to install a driver.. It will search and then say it cannot find file.. I have been messing with it all day.. All I want it to do is work with spotternetwork and GRLevel 3... I have installed more complicated things then this on my computer but this is kicking my but!

Here's a idea.
Does FransonGate work?
Did you try to download the 14-day trial and see if that doesn't make it work?
Maybe you could give it a try -eh?
Other than that, Xp is really good about finding its own operating sys software drivers.

GPSGate isn't a driver. If XP won't recognize the unit, GPSGate won't even be able to interface with the Magellan.

Yes. But since Xp isn't finding drivers or recognizing the hardware with accuracy, I thought that it may need a device driver to act as a proxy for sys recognition. It wouldn't hurt anything to try - provided he is still willing to play with the wiring as well. FransonGate has fixed recognition problems with Vista. It's worth the try...

Yeah I got one also and tried everything to get it to work in xp, even had gpsgate and x-port, still I could never find the right driver for it or get xp to find it. I do have a laptop with vista in it and I will see if it will work. Too bad it is a nice hand held unit.

Magellan

I have tried a few Magellan units and stay away from them for similar reasons. I have used Garmin for years, and recently bought a high end TomTom for navigation. All work well.:p
