Live Storm Chase Portal

Just curious if you're trying to create a new and improved live streaming website or if you had a different agenda Chris? I hear you have to have deep pockets to run a live streaming site, but maybe you're working a different angle.

I would like to create a new streaming site, Not sure about the deep pockets, I base my stuff on opensouce software and applications like the maps for instance google is a arm and leg and don't seem on a ROI to scale well so I went with some free tiles and leaflet. I was looking into a portal for FirstNET but to run a site with me and a friend its about 10 bucks a month on the VPS I have that's with 2TB of data transfer. Tiles can come from a few sources free or paid.. There are a few ways to tackle Video distribution and such .02 cents per GB of overages of data transfer. I have a few slick idea's to bring to the table but its all in limbo right now and what will come of it..

Thanks for the clarification. It sounds like the project should keep you busy for the near term. After TVN closed up shop recently there is a need for a new streaming service in the chaser community. The deep pockets reference I made is based on comments made from previous owners of such a service and how much it cost them to maintain it. It isn't to dissuade you from forging ahead but to make you aware of what has happened in the past. Perhaps you already know all of that, if so I apologize.

Well LSM is attempting with some type of rollout the video streaming is working as of the other day. Scott has redone ChaserTV and it looks good and a good implementation of opensource on the maps and map tiles! TVN was a sweet setup for sure! I've got a few niche market idea's to append to my design and want a responsive design and supporting modules for public safety agency's to stay on my site and use it as a primary tool for WX awareness, I could launch and go live in a day if I wanted to, Just lurking with everything right now because of other stuff in play so that's what the hold off is, kinda keeping my options open right now also. Its far above and beyond what the image I posted shows.

As someone who works in IT and has had my hand in streaming services in the past, you will not survive on a VPS. Bandwidth requirements + server load/traffic will bury you in an instant.

At WDT when I worked there we had 3 front end web servers and 1 back end database server running wordpress in cached modes with a load balancer in front running the CTV website, along with akamai (CDN) delivering thumbnails and images on the site and still had load issues. That doesn't even count the CDN we had feeding the video.

Thanks, Ben. I had a lot of unannounced provisions that were going to be put in place if I fired it up to the public (CDN's, etc) but appreciate the feedback! I have a non compete agreement and the transactions are complete as of the other day so it wont be available publicly to spotters or chasers. When I made the post it was all in lingo, I was thinking of a service possibly but its a sealed deal now.
