Lions & Tigers & WIndows 8 - Oh My!

I'm waiting for the day that your portal device IS your computer, your laptop at work? replaced by a portal device that you plug it into a monitor (or docking station) and has everything you need right there from the mini display to the lcd monitor. When your done, toss it in your pocket and walk off.

Probably a few years off (or is it?) http://tinyurl.com/ya87k75

It's a start and I have seen a device (can't find the link yet) with a HDMI port built into it.

What's this have to do with windows 8? I think they're late and/or missing the party, though it does look interesting!

That's the way it's been going to umm 25 years or so now.

I'm waiting on the ocular wireless HD implant powered by the human body with optional projector to replace displays. Keyboards will go away and be replaced by thought processors. Storage will be that 97% of the brain we don't use which is nearly unlimited. Local Networking will take place using high frequency vocal cords that is unperceivable but detectable by inner ear implants. Backup power will come from fecal matter waiting to be expelled.

I'm a big believer in mobile technology, considering more people have cell phones than computers... and considering the rate at which location-aware smart phones (iPhone, Android OS, etc) are expanding.

Companies like eBay or Craigslist may very well lose relevance if they don't adapt to a social + mobile world - one which allows people to easily snap photos of items and sell them with a sense of geolocation. I'd have the garage unloaded right now if I could do that :D

I also think there's significant growth potential in location-aware gaming, mobile product awareness (you're looking for a new jacket - which retailer near you has the one you want?), and augmented reality (if it can become practical - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1De9YCeKz_A).

I downloaded a cool app called Layers that finally made it from the iPhone. It's a Visual Augmented Reality Browser very similar to the one Robert linked to. You basically hold the phone and the camera is being displayed. Overlapped on the camera image is a layer that points out things around you. For example someone twitted a crime scene in the area with location. When I was spinning around it appeared when I was facing that direction and it appears a distance off. If I got closer the indication grew bigger. Make it like those terminator/robot vision on a phone. Check it out:

The rate at which technology updates is disgusting.

This is why I don't even bother trying to keep up until it becomes a must. Im still rocking XP and wont quit until the things I need [or want I should say] can no longer be ran by it...at which point I will gripe, bitch and moan about how much money and effort it takes to make the leap. Even then my efforts will soon be outdated making me feel as if Ive wasted my time. I guess its a lose lose situation. Oh well.

I like movies such as Idiocracy or even Disney's Wall-E that show how stupid, fat, impatient, ignorant and lazy the human race becomes because we depend so much on our technology. I can see that becoming reality.

I wonder when Microsoft (and the many others) will look outside the box (or window as the case maybe...LOL). I wonder what other possible ways there would be to apply computer/technology that is completely new and fresh. Is 'windows' really the best means to operation. At what point to we look back to the past and remember the day when the idea of windows was made obsolete.

Agreed.

Same here. Go XP!

I haven't seen those movies yet, but I've been thinking the same thing for years. Increased technology is causing the human race to DE-volve. Everything is being done automatically for us now. But what happens when there's a massive power failure and/or all of the servers/hard drives suddenly go down? All of that information is lost. And since more and more of peoples' lives and society is being placed into electronic devices instead of hard copy documents (papers etc), society will crumble if something like that ever happens. Look at the movie "Live Free or Die Hard" - hardly supposed to be serious, but if something like that happened it would be a disaster. Think of cars nowadays...they all have power locks, power windows, and power everything else that will trap you in your car should the battery die or fuses blow or circuits break. Mechanical devices like hammers and screwdrivers are saving graces in those instances. It takes something so ancient...like an underappreciated hand tool...to save you from the problems that increased technology can cause.

Very decent point - IMO...
Points out how manic it all seems. Looks like what is being used on computers now will have an equal place on mobile telephones at the present pace. Computers will probably be integrated into everying in the home. They are always looking for the newest killer 'app'. Using a window at some point will become obsolete - true. Probably have a screen that has a familiar face on it that talks to you and discusses what you want to do via voice recognition programs - which have come up to that mark in recent years. Just a thought...
