Is This the Biggest Watch Ever?

I was wondering the same thing. Second day in a row with a gygundo slight risk too. Still surprised a watch was never issued for the southern Appalachians yesterday with so many warnings and so many reports that continued literally all day.

That's one big single watch area. In all the years I've been watching the weather, I have never seen one that size..

Haha, yeah, I was actually just wondering how many square miles that box is! Anyone know a good way to calculate that? If I did, it would require me doing a lot of GIS that I don't really have time to do right now.

Well, just by the standard watch box measurements of "85 miles east and west of a line from 65 miles SE of Owyhee, Nevada to 5 miles NNE of Great Falls, Montana", that puts the watch box at 460 miles long by 170 miles wide. 78,200 square miles. Of course there are always counties included in the box that mostly fall outside the box and counties left out of the watch that mostly fall in the box. But that would be the rough estimate.

78,200. Wow!

Wow is right. That's almost half the size of California and bigger than the state of New York!

EDIT: That was weird. I didn't purposely almost coping your post to verbatim, Sarah.

No bad it it was #667....as what might have been considered the end of the world watch had it been issued one watch box earlier.

I once saw all of Ontario under a tornado watch, but given how insane that sounds, it was probably just an oopsie on EC's website or something. So this probably doesn't really count as far as large watch areas go lol. Wish I took a screen capture....
