Now passing into the time of year where severe convective storms develop across the Indo Gangetic Plain of northeastern India and Bangladesh.
Moist south or southwesterly winds occasionally pervade northwards up the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, at the same time that extremely dry air feeds southeastwards off the Tibetan Plateau. The effect is very simular to that of a Spring hail/tornado set-up in the USA, but the parameters can be more extreme. CAPE values in excess of 9000J/kg have been measured.
The extreme instability can generate storms of major severity, such that massive hailstones and strong tornadoes occasionally occur when conditions are right, sometimes killing many hundreds. However, due to poor infrastructure and reporting, these events rarely make the news, unless there is a major disaster.
Might be interesting to create a list of any severe storms within this thread.
