Hail Scale for Chasers and Spotters on Android

Just released version 1.1! This version includes a calibrate button so that you can really dial in the accuracy of the on screen scale. You can do it one time or many and the program will save your setting and adjust automatically every time from then on out. enjoy!

Thanks for the App Verne! I'll give it a try this season. The only problem I see is that large sizes will be too big for my phone to measure #firstworldstormchaserproblems ;). That and having to use my smart phone with wet hands to measure hail.

Currently, I have a non electronic, physical "Hail Scale" that I got at a NSWW conference like 8 years ago. Its made from a thin, flexible, plastic material with all the sizes cut out like a pasta measuring stick. It also has a ruler on the side for greater than 3" sizes. This has been my main way to measure since I can just keep it in the sun visor and pull it out in any weather to quickly get a hail size. Unfortunately, mine is starting to crack apart a bit after I left it on the dash and the heat got to it and degraded it. It was made by a company called "Tornado Alley, Inc" out of Perkins, OK. Wish I could find a new one but Google has turned up nothing. I might try and make a new one some how if I can't find the company that sells them. Here's what it looks like. They are really handy!

Hi Gerard,
I have that exact same plastic Hail Scale and it's great but you're right you can't get them anymore (as much as I can tell). I still have mine in the glovebox but I wanted something digital that everyone could carry. For the larger sizes I've found that you can put most of the curve of the largest object (softball) and still measure off it even on a smartphone. Of course a 7" or larger tablet is no problem. I hope that people won't drip wet hailstones over the phone but hold the phone and hail at arms length out in front of them.

I tried the app out last week....( see photo ) but it wouldn't report the hail sizes as the hail was falling onto the screen....am I doing something wrong?
