Graphics in signature (small ones)

I was wondering if we could get graphics in our signatures. I'm thinking small ones. Small banner style, to show off our websites, social media, etc. links. Personally I like to have "buttons" for twitter, RSS feed, Vimeo...etc. (similar to what is in text form in my sig. now). I'd even be willing to do it on a small fee basis ($5 per year) since I know it might but a slightly higher strain on the servers...but maybe the extra little bit of money could compensate and pay for more capacity.

The best solution to your request (IMHO) would be to add tiny graphics to the "smilies" folder that could be used by anyone. (RSS, Twitter, FB, YT, etc.) That's not the same as letting you put any graphic you want in your sig, but I agree that could be pretty darn annoying. Adding some additional small options in the "smilies" folder give the admin control over the size and content of any sig graphics to the ones that would be used by multiple people.

You'll notice I've added a smiley to my sig. The URL of that particular graphic is:
http://www.stormtrack.org/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif
So I'm assuming the board admin can add more graphics of a given size there.

That would work for me...as I'm interested in the twitter, YT, etc logos as mentioned, however I'm also keeping the idea open to others who might want a simple graphic for their site. The smiley folder idea is good if I can still make the logo linkable to the source. I might play with the existing smiley's first...and if it works can be at least something. I agree...I don't want it to become too annoying, but I believe in the past we did have the option of small graphics in the signature line, but no longer. I could be wrong though. Not sure if a web archive site might reveal it.

Use your avatar.

Otherwise, that would just add to the growing list of annoyances on ST.

Seconded. If someone has a visual ad in their signature, there's a good chance I'll configure my account to hide all of your posts. Out of all the things this forum could use, better advertisements for individuals should not be high on the list of priorities.

This has been brought up before and the general consensus was that banner graphics in signatures are too distracting. Perhaps its time to take another look at this, but I believe the general opinion remains the same. We'll see if Tim has any thoughts/opinions as this is an admin issue.

My opinion doesn't matter much, but I think banner graphics would be very annoying and distracting. Links without graphics work just fine in my opinion.

I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT ADs!!!! PLEASE READ WHAT I POSTED!!!

I'm talking about a simple graphic version of what is already in 90% of the signatures now. If you want to hide it....fine...but that's YOUR choice...I want to have a choice too.

For example:signature icon example.gif

Again...the Avatar would not work because:
1) it's not relevant...duh
2) there is more than one element
3) avatars are there to identify a person in a personal way...not links

Look at my current signature. The graphics would be cleaner looking, nicer looking, and are very familiar with folks today. It is also a standard on almost every other forum.

I did say "banner" as in horizontally oriented to prevent the graphics from being more than say ~ 100px tall.

OK, I'll go back and read what you posted..

Do you want icons for Youtube/Facebook links, or do you want advertisements for your personal site that you sell goods on? These requests are not inherently tied together from a software development point of view no matter how you slice it. I don't see a problem with promoting your business, but allowing users to upload their own 100px tall images is opening the door to a gaudy and annoying site. I'm still failing to see why this should be a priority over other enhancements like a dedicated photography forum, but that's just my opinion.

Banner does not equal ad...you are associating something that isn't tied together. I think my graphic is example enough.

True, it isn't a priority item. The photography subforum was discussed and defeated. Skip mentioned signatures being brought up before, but I haven't found a dedicated discussion on the matter...at least for a few years. I could be wrong, but I did do a quick search first.
