GOES-O (GOES-14) Blast Off

Your not going to see anything new from it Steve. According to the article it will undergo 6 months of testing then go into "orbital storage" and be used to replace either the GOES 11 or 12. GOES 13 is already in storage waiting to be used. So for now it and 13 are backups. nothing more.

I dont understand not using it to increase coverage instead of just being a backup. Use it now and if we lose one we still have 2-3 operating. Why have 2 running and 2 in storage? At least use 1 of the 2 and keep 1 as backup. Waste of money to me.

Waste of money to me.

They're simply getting the most out of the old sats. before putting the new
ones into place, when the old sats power supplies begin to fail or 2011, which ever comes first.

One of the reason is that the current sats are in violation
of international power output for signals produced by
the down links.

The new sat signal will be less powerful and within international
regulations.

EMWIN will greatly benefit from the new sats. Higher data speeds,
going from 9600 to 19200. This will allow for more weather products
and images to be sent down.
While not up to the speeds of the current NOAAPort system it is an improvement.

Getting the most out of the old before activating the
new doesn't seem like a bad idea.

But then I am not looking forward to spending $2000.00 to switch
my sat. system over to the new. But thats how it goes..
