so I have a Canon EOS T2i, it records video with sound in mono only but I can use a stereo external microphone, right ?

question : do all microphones use an internal battery ? or is there a microphone that will be powered by the shoe contacts ?

what is a good choice of an external microphone, specifically for stormchasing, with wind shoe, reducing wind noise, and minimal size ?

any suggestion ?

I remember long ago on one of my Sony handycams I bought an external microphone but I hated the fact that it needed a battery to work because there was no way to be informed when the battery would die on the microphone and I might suddenly record video without sound... Ideally would be a microphone that does not need a battery but that gets its power from the camera batteries through either the hotshoe , or via the USB jack ?

Your built-in microphone records mono, but the input jack is stereo and will record stereo. The mic must be self-powered. There is a thread for microphone recommendations here.
