So here I am, nearly ready to chase this season, did a little test with the dash cam, gps, wireless modem, i have so many cables coming from the laptop, lay the unit on the passenger seat, which when chasing will have 2 to 4 people in the car. Anyways, with all that’s going on, the laptop needs to be stabilized so it can't move around or become a projectile in an accident.

Here is the dilemma, I live on the west coast and fly into the plains and rent a vehicle to chase in. We all know how that goes, reserve a particular model, but when you get there you get something else. So it would be very tough to buy a RAM and hope that it works in whatever you get at the airport. RAM makes a universal mount, but in the installation instructions it says to cut the flex arms, so this would be limited for future installs.

RAM also makes a backseat unit that looks pretty nice, is very adaptable from different makes of vehicles, and price nicely. http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...rtid/082065077045050051052045052/Default.aspx

But navigating from the back seat sucks. Any ideas on how to tie down a laptop in the front passenger seat in a RENTAL situation that will work in many different models of vehicles?

I have the same issue because I fly in a get a rental car as well. My solution, while not the best, is better than just having it slide around on the front passenger seat. I chase alone so no one to hold the laptop.

I actually use velcro on the bottom of the PC and then put some on the center cup holder / compartment thing between the front seats. Usually works great. Most of the time SUVs have a bigger area between the seats so those work the best. The material on those dividers is fake leather or some other synthetic material it is easy to remove without damaging the car.

I always thought this was one of the more interesting suggestions:

On a more serious note, I have the Jotto Desk standard no holes mount and it seems to work with a variety of vehicles. It can be found here:

It actually comes in a box that you could travel with and probably check as a piece of baggage. As long as the seat rails and floor board of the rented vehicle are relatively flat, you can use this model and it installs in like 15 mintes.
