I shot this last spring because of the various odd cloud types in the picture.
The lenticular cloud was odd here but it's the others that I am more unsure of, are those lee waves of sorts? There was a longer line of them that was on either side of the capture.
They look like rotor clouds, but I am not sure about this. They do form on the lee side of mountains or hills and I am thinking that the hilly terrain south and southeast of Cottonwood Falls, KS (did you take this picture from near Burlington?) led to the formation of these cloud features. A diagram can be seen on page 407 of Atmospheric Science An Introductory Survey, by Wallace and Hobbs.
That is an odd occurrence so far removed from substantial mountains. Nice picture!
Thanks Charles, I wouldn't think the Flint Hills would cause anything like that no higher than they are but again I thought either was odd here. Yes Burlington.
