Close lightning strike

I have just gotten around to getting this done. I was out north of Amarillo filming some lightning about 2 weeks ago. I had the video camera running and got a close lightning strike. At first, I thought it might have been further than it really was. Going back frame by frame revealed it was a lot closer than I thought it was. I have to thank David Drummond for initially showing it to me frame by frame from his video camera at the SDS party a week or so ago.

The lightning hit a road sign about 50 yards from my location. The thunder was instantaneous. You can see by the vehicle that the strike lit it up, and also the pavement on the road.

Cool shot! One other thing I notice is the shadow cast from the truck. If you de-interlaced that image, you might be able to make out even more detail. You also might try extracting the frames immediately before and after. There might be sparks coming off the sign or some 'bead out' from the main channel.

Absolutely awesome shot, Jason! Like Tony said, shots like that are why I try to keep the camera rolling...especially if there is lightning in the area. I would have loved to have been a fly on the window in that truck ahead of you . I imagine there were many colorful metaphors uttered

Definitely a great capture, Not terrible image quality either being a vid cap in darkness I'm assuming, since you said "it lit up the truck"

It wasn't dark yet. I think it was about 8 at the time of the strike.

I apologize Rocky...next time we have the TX SDS party, you're invited my man! I would love to come to your party, but I have to go to a local college football game (WTAMU) this Saturday to help the station out. We play the #1 team in the nation in Division 2 football which is Grand Valley State. It might get ugly, but I hope we at least show up.

I kinda surprised that the truck driver doesn't even flinch. You'd expect a small wheel jerk to go along with the the "What-Tha!"
