Bill Gates (Yes...That Bill Gates) Hurricane Killer????

To think somebody as smart as Bill Gates is trying to do something that ridiculous is almost mind boggling. How do they think that can possibly take up enough water change the temperature of an entire region of ocean by more than maybe a degree. Even if they did it would severely hurt the wildlife in the area since they are used to warm water. I don't know maybe I'm wrong but it just sounds so impractical.

The actual patent application is dumber than I'd thought, IMHO. See http://www.techflash.com/One_force_..._Gates_wants_to_stop_hurricanes_50385622.html

Waves lapping into floating tubs? Please....

If you really want to do what they say (which I don't think is a good idea) then I have a concept in mind that's completely passive, no obstruction to navigation, and little maintenance with proper design. I guess I should be taking out a patent -- pfeh!

Just patent hounding. If someone was to figure a way to control the strength of the storms Bill wants a cut. Besides applying for a patent doesn't mean it's going to happen. Like many idiots they like to tie up progress with bloated red tape just to make a cheap dime. It happened with the morons collecting domain names when the web first went world wide. They turned around and started selling off the names for big bucks. Thanks guys.

I don't imagine anything like this would even make a dent in the processes that create a storm as massive as a hurricane.

Looks like a lot of hot air, I mean water, to me.

Uh, oh. I found a picture of Bill hard at work on this project as we speak!

My favorite quote from the ABC News article..lol:

Others have proposed blowing up a hurricane with hydrogen bombs and blowing storms away from land with windmills.

bawaahahahahahahaha!!! blowing up a Hurricane with a hydrogen bomb? or blowing them away from land with windmills? We really are a primitive and arrogant species aren't we?

but I love this one equally.

From the mid-1960s through the early '80s, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) actively pursued hurricane modification through Project STORMFURY.

Its approach involved "seeding" clouds with a substance (silver iodide and dry ice, for example) with a structure similar to that of ice. It was thought that by spreading the ice-inducing substance in the cloud, they could reduce the intensity of the storm.

However, the project ultimately failed (duh ya think?) . Scientists learned that hurricane systems already include ice crystals, so introducing new ones would have little, if any, effect

lulz!

are you kidding me right? 40-60K feet up in the air, and the scientists didn't realize ice crystals already existed? You could have asked a World War II bomber pilot if ice crystals were existent in the clouds at 30,000 - 40,000 feet, and he'd have told you all about their bombers freezing up at those altitudes.

just what kind of scientists are/were these? The Emmett "Doc" Browns of the 50's and 60's rounded up by the Secret Service and FBI from their garages and herded into some gigantic think tank?

Jimminy Christmas and I thought illegal immigrants were stupid.

Hey, that's MY idea! :p

Hubristic or not, at least Bill has a sensible mechanism for reducing available convective energy. (It beats some of the hare-brained schemes such as flying supersonic jets around the eyewall!) I first heard the sketchy details of his water pumping scheme a few days ago. I got to thinking about where the energy would come from, and came up with a strikingly similar wave powered design.

Some quick math suggests that overcoming the buoyancy of the warmer water will require about 6 inches of hydraulic head - not an issue. I suspect that a few gazillion of these pumps might actually turn over enough ocean to mix the upper layer of ocean. Whether or not this is a good idea is another issue! The potential impact on sea life, ocean currents (large scale heat transfer), regional climate, etc. would be huge. Running a few dozen of these things might make for an interesting small scale experiment, but I'd think LONG and hard before screwing with the entire Gulf of Mexico!

Hmmmmmmmmm

You know waht really worries me is the space elevator--I kinda think a tube connecting ground level to the vacum of space will just suck all the atmosphere out into space--that would be wild--or the LHC firing up again pretty soon..
As far as this all goes--why are we screwing around with the Moon again? Why not shoot a rocket with some H2O and some seeds or the like to Mars? I do not feel there is any possability of colonizing the moon, but Mars--YES

the moon is a tiny bit closer and they want to use it as the starting point for manned missions to mars.

Space elevator - the only problem with your worry is something called gravity. It'll keep the atmosphere just fine.

The LHC is perfectly safe, all the fear-mongers are getting to you.

The Moon has a lot of minerals for mining and is also a solid body to build stuff on to go further out... Reason enough.

As far as Bill Gates goes, even if he doesn't do anything, there's good money to be had in owning the patents...

I really hope this was a joke. If not you might want to consider going back to school.
