  • The preliminary tornado count from April 2020 was among the most on record in April.
  • April 2020 had about one-third more tornadoes than average.
  • The Easter Sunday and Monday outbreak contributed to over half the month's tornadoes.
  • April 2011 still had almost three times the tornadoes of April 2020.

The number of tornadoes in the U.S. in April 2020 was among the most for any April in 70 years of records, according to data compiled by the National Weather Service and weather.com.

Culling through the list of tornadoes confirmed by National Weather Service damage surveys and those documented by video or photos, we estimate at least 256 tornadoes touched down in the U.S. in April 2020.

If this total holds, it would be the fourth most of any April on record since 1950, slightly behind the count from 2019.
