I was wondering if anyone has upgraded to version 2 of GRLevel3. And if so, how do you like it? Is it worth the $$$ and hassle to reload all the shapefiles and such?

Thanks!

The biggest advantage in doing so is having access to dual pol as well as LSRs, I would say its worth it for those 2 add-ons alone. It has a google map background which I personally am indifferent towards but many find it useful. Keeping v1 on the chase laptop though since its less graphic intense.

Thanks Adam for these first infos.
I've three questions more: regarding LSR, I read:

GRLevel2 downloads Local Storm Reports from the public NWS server. Icons representing the type and magnitude of an LSR are shown in the radar display. Hover your mouse pointer over an LSR icon to see details of the report. Only LSRs issued within 60 minutes of the currently displayed product's volume scan time are shown.

Within 60 minutes it means it's not immediate as the one coming from storm spotter, wich gives you an instant report coming from chasers.

Regarding google maps, could you make me a screen shot in order to take a look at how it looks like? (I know I could download the trial version but I prefer doing it in April).

As regards the shapefile, is there a new quick method to reload those damn shapefiles?
Thanks!

That's confusing? If I report it now, it will show up on the GR3 spotternetwork plot in a minute or so. If the LSR is issued immediately, maybe another minute or two. I know of no faster source for plotting?

Why would you unload them in the first place?

I was under the impression that version 2 was a whole new install that uses different folder structures and registry entries. If that is the case I would guess that you'd have to reinstall all the shapefiles again. Anyone have version 2 that can verify this?

I've got GR3v2 and like it. The dual-poll features are its biggest benefits, to my thinking, though I have to confess I'm not up to snuff on their use. It will take me a little hands-on during storm season to figure out how to use the new DP features.

But as Adam has mentioned, v.2 is more graphics-intensive, and I too have kept the first version on my laptop for chasing. Practically speaking, it will do the job for me just fine, though after using v.2 for a while, I may decide that it does give me an edge in the field.

The upgrade only costs 40 bucks if you already own GR3, so why not just give it a try and see how you like it.

Coincidentally I just got it today so my experience with the product is very limited. The new version offers higher resolution capabilities as well as greater categories of products. I like the integration of product information into the background any by incorporating the warnings into the toolbar it eliminated the need for the panel on the right, opening more screen for viewing. Overall it makes for an improved interface in my opinion. I’ll try to use it on active chases when possible but I’ll keep the older version loaded if data transfer presents a problem. Obviously the more I’ll use it on chases the better the value but just having it at home makes it worth the relatively modest cost for me.

I can verify that is not correct. It brings those in when you first install V2.

It didn’t for me but maybe I did something wrong. As mentioned above installation is separate from version 1 and none of my shapefiles or placefiles were incorporated into the newer version. It really wasn’t an issue though as you can run both programs simultaneously and copy/paste placefiles from the old into the new. I use very few Shapefiles so that really wasn’t a hassle either.

Here’s a user guide for the newer version:

So, if you go to the File menu of the new version and choose Import, then Placefiles, it doesn't import your them from version 1? It did on mine.

On the V2 program do a File>Import>Whichever of the 5 options listed to easily import your settings from V1 to V2.

Placefiles will move all of the placefiles from V1 into V2.

Road Settings will transfer the settings you had if you use Mike's native road database.

State/County Line and warning settings will be transferred over.

With Site Settings you will need to go to each radar site and click it to transfer over the unique settings you have for each site. For instance, I use Scott Lincoln's road database found here: http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~slincoln/GRS/shapefiles/

Edit: Beaten to the punch I see.

If it is so it's very nice. I actually thought that LSR could be updated on the Grlevel2 with a late time (that is within 60 min).

As regards my opinion about shapefiles, I would appreciate an effort to eliminate the shapefile-stylefile system in order to introduce a faster and more practical uploading method of roads and cities, but it's just an opinion.
