I had this forwarded to me today from a coworker: http://hint.fm/wind/

Pretty fascinating display of surface winds. Like anything else, it's bound by sample resolution, so accuracy becomes suspect as you zoom in. It sure does make surface convergence easy to spot though.

It would be hard to believe this isn't a repost, but I didn't see anything about it after searching.
 
Yeah, I saw this too and was going to post the link if nobody else did. Keep in mind the creators of the map are calling it an art project and won't vouch for its accuracy, but still... Imagine if you could get maps like this for every level of the atmosphere, or when looking at forecast models - although I don't know if it could be made to work with anything but surface data, usually whenever you see streamlines it's strictly surface. Regardless, I find this map fascinating. Even though there really isn't any "new" information being presented, the animation really does give you a much more intuitive grasp of what's happening.
