A short introduction from a weather enthusiast who's looking to move up.

Greetings all, my name is Tim.

I've been a weather enthusiast for many years, first living in Houston, TX, and seeing several hurricanes in person. Alicia in 1983, (my first) Jerry in '89, TS Frances in '98, and TS Allison in '01, and witnessed the cluster-flooge that was the evacuation for Rita in '05. Saw lots of winds, lots of flooding, and several tornadoes spawned by the storms. TS Frances I actually rode out in a grocery store parking lot in an Oldsmobile. (Wasn't that bad!)

In 2006, I moved to Kansas, ready for the marvel of four real seasons, and to see if tornado alley lived up to it's name, however, I had just purchased a new vehicle, and wasn't exactly keen on hail-stoning it, be it accidental or intentional. So, for several years, I lived in the Garvey Center downtown, and rather than chase, I observed from a 24th floor observation lounge.

Now, things have changed for me. I am a car guy who's become tired of cars, and one of my last projects was a Dodge pickup I bought for cheap, and came pre-hailstoned. That means I can now shift gears, and get into storm chasing and spotting.

I'm looking for chase opportunities, and the chance to learn from those that are willing to teach. I love to drive, so my range is only limited by my fuel budget, LOL.

Sorry for being so long winded, and I hope to see you guys around. I'm going email the NWS about the skywarn course, and of course, see about spotter network. And without a doubt, I will be taking in all the links I have seen you guys posting. Some really excellent stuff I have seen so far.

Hello there!

And welcome to the first day of many awesome ones, I hope.

I can help you right away with the storm spotter stuff. They have sanctioned a new online course for spotters with MetED, and once you take the course, you even get the certificates. Sign up is free, and it takes about two to three hours to complete, but you can stop at any time and come back to pick up from where you left off:
https://www.meted.ucar.edu/training_course.php?id=23

After taking it, though, you'll definitely want to go through a live class as well.

Anyways, welcome, and good luck!

That's awesome, right there. I'll sign up to take that tonight, maybe tomorrow.

Thanks for the link!

Tim
