A Short Chase Vid

I put this video together from this year, taking most of my highlights and trying to condense them into a short enough piece to give a basic overview of how the season went. Other than May 24th, the days kind of weren't very fruitful....but I caught the May 24th cell from near it's birth so the season went well enough for me :)

I used an HV20 most of the year (note the rolling shutter a few times with lightning strikes). Edited it with Final Cut Express and used music (with permission) from 3 fairly popular artists online. Anyone needing some good music for their vids (and too lazy/not creative enough to make some on your own) should check Kevin Macleod, Moby and Positively Dark out. Anywho, if you have any questions about how I might've done anything feel free to ask, most of it was fairly straightforward cutting though.

Chris,

I enjoyed your video a lot and thought your choice of music to accompany the footage was very tasteful. I noticed that one person thought the opening might have been a little long, but I don't agree with that.

Thanks for sharing this with us and it looked like you had a successful chase season to work with.

Thanks Richard...I actually agree with him on that, but I didn't upload the shorter intro version since it wasn't finished yet :D

My biggest regret is that most of my video wasn't very good, so trying to make anything quality based off of unspectacular video is a huge challenge. I'm hoping I can change that this year :)

I liked the film a lot, but I do agree that the opening was too long.

Nice Video!

I really like how it handles the difficult lighting conditions of storm chasing. I'm probably gonna go with the hv30 or a similar model and I'm happy to see these kinds of results.

BTW, good job on the editing if thought that you didn't have that good of footage to work with.

Wait, MOBY lets people use his music along with videos for free? Fo shizzle?! This has me kinda thunderstruck. I mean, that's awesome, and I can think of a few Moby songs that would make great soundtracks to videos, but the idea of a top-shelf artist like Moby giving stuff away like that is amazing. Even the crappy RF musicians charge $50 bucks or so a song.

Moby gives his music away free to filmmakers

Yeah, Moby has about 50 songs or so available to download. The problem is, that's all he has available so the more storm chasers who use his music the more likely you will hear repetitive music in some vids. So my advice would be to pay attention to what everyone else is doing unless you don't care :D

Personally, while I like Moby's music, I probably won't use his music all that much going forward because his site is growing with popularity and I'd rather not have videos that look and sound like other vids (chasing or not) on the web.

But for sure, every track on his site is of the absolute best quality and anyone interested should definitely check em out for sure!

I was going to reply to everyone's post thanking them for the comments/suggestions and such but instead I'll just put out a blanket thank you to all of the kind words and suggestions! This year was more of a test shoot for what I'm hoping will be more of a master project in 2009, so hopefully I have something even better coming down the aisle this next year. All we all need is for mother nature to cooperate :D

BTW, I noticed today today that EMI is signed on with Youtube -- that is, user generated content on Youtube can use music from EMI artists. So long (I suppose) as the video is not a revenue gathering device EMI isn't going to issue a takedown. From what I gather, I believe this means you can use any song from any of these artists:

in your Youtube videos. Can't put it on your DVDs, of course -- but if Youtube is your main distro point, then it would seem you have a lot of options for soundtrack.
