I chased in West Michigan today along the lakeshore and scored my best shelf cloud to date in Grand Haven.

While I only measured a whopping 22.8mph winds, the structure makes up for it. You can read my whole chase recap at http://www.benholcomb.com/Chase-Accounts/20100718

I've also posted a short video of some clips from today

took a quick jog after a small cell the developed ahead of the main line of storms in the northern part of the state around 9pm ish around caseville and watched as it developed a nice lowering and at times some weak/slow rotation before falling apart just west of port hope, then ran south into a mess trying to get south of the tornado warned storm in northern tuscola county, but by the time i got south it had weakened quite a bit and i returned home. All in all a decent little backyard chase.

Going out tomorrow to see about damage, first around port hope and then back into northern tuscola county.

Feh! Warm sector storms here in Michigan never could quite get their act together today. Kurt Hulst and I targeted a small, isolated cell that was out ahead of two squall lines to its north and south (the northern one being the one Ben was on) and intercepted it at Plainwell. We busted east in order to stay ahead of it, but the area we got into in Barry County is pure jungle, and it took us forever just to find a place where we could get a clear view of the storm. When we finally found a good spot, the storm was well to our west, but the cloud base was nicely visible. We could see a wall cloud in the distance which showed rapid motion (that is, rapidly changed shape), but we were too far away from it to determine whether there was any actual rotation. I called it in, and then the storm promptly fell to pieces directly after. Guess I jinxed it.

The rest of today was uneventful, though it was fun to hook up with Ben Holcomb, LB and BB LaForce, and Nick Nolte at the Walldorff in Hastings afterward.

Here is my video from today also. Just a wall cloud for me near Allegan. Here is the chase recap: http://lblaforce.com/20100718MI

*Watch in fullscreen full HD version, and watch the rapid upward/downward motion along the edge of the lowering when we are stopped.*
