I was busy all day so I didnt look much at any data, until around 7:00 or so when I saw a MD out for NE Iowa. I looked at the data on the meso analysis page and saw the off the wall numbers screaming supercells after dark there. Now, I like lightning photography just as much as day time chasing, and since I have NO lightning this year, I figured I would drive the 2.5 hours to IA and get some lightning tonight. I didn thave to go that far as a cell was growing in strength in Grant county and was heading SE towards the Belmont area just as I was getting to Belmont. Nothing was going in IA so I decided to play with this storm. Im glad I did, cause the lightning was great. But... It did some things that confused me. First, it had no branching, and second most of the bolts were very straight up and down.
Also, the thunder was different as well. It sounded more like explosions than thunder.
