I was busy all day so I didnt look much at any data, until around 7:00 or so when I saw a MD out for NE Iowa. I looked at the data on the meso analysis page and saw the off the wall numbers screaming supercells after dark there. Now, I like lightning photography just as much as day time chasing, and since I have NO lightning this year, I figured I would drive the 2.5 hours to IA and get some lightning tonight. I didn thave to go that far as a cell was growing in strength in Grant county and was heading SE towards the Belmont area just as I was getting to Belmont. Nothing was going in IA so I decided to play with this storm. Im glad I did, cause the lightning was great. But... It did some things that confused me. First, it had no branching, and second most of the bolts were very straight up and down. :confused: Also, the thunder was different as well. It sounded more like explosions than thunder.
