A series of severe thunderstorms moved through southern Illinois and western Kentucky - we had some spectacular Mammatus Clouds here in Massac County, Illinois. Numerous reports of wind gusts over 60 mph were received over our region. SPC had us in a slight and moderate risk for severe storms.

KPAH was quite busy - numerous warnings were issued.

Some photos I put on my family blog

Me and Matt Hunt left from Indianapolis around 2 EST, tracked down I-70 hoping to initiate the front cell then go on to the main event.

We initiated the front cell which was severe warned about 8 miles south of Terre Haute, upon arriving on the south side of the storm we did notice some very weak rotation a times, and saw a little bit of lift but there were no surface winds to speak of and it was pretty obvious that this cell wasn't going to produce anything. Seeing that the 2 cells behind it were about to merge we decided to watch this one go by and move on.

These leading cells had some impressive storm structure and large updrafts. As we approached the second cell velocity was showing almost the same thing on this cell very weak if any rotation, meanwhile cells in Illinois were going tornado warned. So we made the decision to go back into Illinois. Hit Newton about the time the cells went linear, just missed some golf ball sized hail then got stuck in the rain core all the way back home... Pretty big bust day but posted a few pics from the chase...

I chased with L.B. LaForce southwest of Indianapolis yesterday. We were on the tornado warned supercells, but didn't see anything interesting with those.

We did however get the consolation prize, a beautiful shelf cloud as it rolled through Bloomington.

I will be posting a chase recap on my website at a later date. Still have so many days to catch up on!

In Indiana I've always gone by the rule that chasing in the southern half of the state is impossible... however I broke that rule and chased in SW Indiana. Got on a tornado warned cell as it approached Bloomington from the W and completely fell apart and went outflow. Then stuck around about 10 miles north of Bloomington for the squall line.

Sirens were blaring in Bloomington, as the SW portion of the storm falls apart

Fast moving hail core in a bulge of the following squall line, north of Bloomington
