6/14/10 REPORTS: IN/IL

Watched the radar as storms rolled through Indianapolis mid-day, then the cell west of Lafayette caught my attention, as it was showing some rotation. I decided to go for it, and by the time I was 30 minutes away, it went tornado warned. I got on it just south of Lafayette, and followed it down to Colfax before it lost organization, and I decided to head home.

There was a nice wall cloud on this cell for a while with broad rotation, but never anything tight enough to produce. I had no radar data, so I have to thank Rob Gardner for nowcasting, and putting me in perfect position right under the meso.

While the rotation never tightened up, I did witness an incredible downburst. I have a couple pictures of it, but the pictures really don't do it justice! It was definitely one of the coolest things I've seen so far while storm chasing, as I have yet to bag a tornado! One of these days...

I too played around with the Central Indiana Storms tonight. I shot down from Fort Wayne just to shoot east and catch this fun shelf cloud near Arcadia, IN

I guess we can add Iowa and Illinois to the title.

We chased a tornado warned mini-supercell in western and central Mercer County Illinois. The storm displayed some pretty decent structure most of it's life cycle. It initially moved east, and then took a hard right turn and moved south-southeast. The storm maintained a massive wall cloud the entire time we were on it. Rotation was evident much of the time, but pretty weak. Did note one small/brief funnel.

Gotta love storm motions that are less than 15mph!

This afternoon I arrived north of Abilene,TX and made my way up to between Clairemont and Post to witness a really nice rotating storm. It gave me nearly a full show: wall cloud, wall cloud w/ funnel, rain and hail. Later on in the day I moved south to north of Gail,TX in Bordon county where I was essentially surrounded by storms. I found a hilltop and sampled all three catching a distant funnel from the one to my east.

This was my old stomping grounds and it sure felt nice to be able to see the sights in that area of the state again although only briefly.
