a beautiful late afternoon supercell thursday 21 May in France, from north of Clermont-Ferrand to Roanne to Macon (Center France to Burgundy). it sadly died before reaching Switzerland. RIP.

I did not chase it , but wow :

Found this report with photos :

as the storm was approaching the Macon area / Beaujolais hills

and this video, a bit earlier, between Roanne and Macon :

bad video, but look at the size of the hail at the end of the clip

that area often gets spectacular storms and supercells but the hills, forests and windy roads make it difficult to chase.

the cell near Roanne :

found no report of tornado, but that is some pretty large hail there.

Very cool pictures. Glad to see there is action occurring at least somewhere else in the world. This supercell looked LPish. Also based on satellite, it looked like the only one in the region. How common are supercells in France/western Europe?

Outstanding! Still shaking my head. Now we know where all the action is... should have scheduled a chase vacation in Europe this year. While we endure the endless wrath of the death ridge, Europe is having all the fun! The Clermont-Ferrand supercell and associated hail footage is fantastic (despite the poor audio quality), and the German tornado footage is even better! Looks like Kansas!

Merci pour les belles photos et vidéos!

This needs to be changed from a report thread to a discussion thread..

MOD NOTE: Just a reminder that ONLY FIRST HAND CHASE REPORTS go in a reports thread. If you have a comment to make about the report, put it in a DISC thread for the same date, or start one. This has been happening a lot lately. CHASE REPORT=ACTUALLY CHASED THE STORM

If you weren't personally there and witnessed the event with your own two eyes, you can't post in the REPORT thread.

You can't post for someone else, you can't post what you saw on the news, read on the Internet, read on the SPC/NWS websites, etc etc. All of that stuff goes in a DISC thread for the same date.

WOW! How sad is it that the best tornado in the month of May happens in Europe?? Think I'll ride out this ridge in Belgium.

What is really sad is that right now somewhere out on the plains, is a sunburned and angry German who paid a lot of money to come over here for a chase vacation, only to see this happening back home.

Man that is incredible video of an awesome tornado. I actually have big plans to go to Canada, Europe, Argentina, South Africa, and Australia to chase someday when I can afford it! My dad and I are planning Canada this year, hopefully by July we will got into an "active" summer pattern instead of this dead pattern because that is when our trip is.

OOPS !! sorry, I was not aware of this.... yes, please move it over to discussion thread. My apologies...

P.S. this weekend has again severe potential in France...

Hi Olivier and all others,

thanks for opening this thread. May 21st has indeed been a very active severe weather day over many parts of France and Germany. There were several reports of large hail up to 6 cm in diameter and some reports of damaging winds. There was even a pretty strong tornado in nern Germany, near the city of Schwerin. Olivier has already posted a link to the video clip. I myself was able to observe a meso from my balcony on the 3rd floor that day. It was moving right across Hamburg. More intense supercells erupted near an outflow boundary south of Berlin later that afternoon. Check out these images, taken near Frankfurt/Oder (the smaller Frankfurt :)), close to the Polish border:

So far, the month of May as a whole has been active in terms of severe weather. There were many reports of rotating storms esp. in swrn Germany, such as on May 9th. Look at the rock-hard updraft towers...

Unfortunately, storms like these are still being underestimated (even by some wx services) and the public doesn´t have the kind of weather awareness as in the U.S. (by far). Luckily, there were no fatalities with the Schwerin case but, as the F4 in Hautmont (France) last year has showed, things could get much worse when we´ll get another outbreak in more populated areas in the future...

Regards,
Lars
