Had a nice local chase today, following a pretty little cell for about 50 miles from Worden, IL to Coalton, IL. Started out discrete and had excellent structure, but it eventually got swallowed up by the squall line to its south. Might have done quite a bit more if it had been able to stay discrete longer, but that was not to be.

A couple pics:

There was certainly speed shear and some directional shear (winds ahead of the storms were due south), but ultimately too much forcing and not enough instability to get tornadic storms. More pics and discussion at:

Funnel cloud - Illinois

Took the chase to central Illinois yesterday afternoon and wound up in Livingston county. I saw a tornado on the ground for a few seconds, but after stopping the car to get a few photos, it lifted. Here are a few photos near Forrest, Illinois of the funnel cloud. After a couple of minutes, it never seemed to resurface as the storm headed NE.

Started day on the fence on chasing. When sun popped out pretty will, I changed my mind. Tornado watch issued. Targeted 2 cells moving out of Missouri to catch near mississippi river near Rt 3 W. of murphysboro IL. Cells fighting for some inflow for some time. As I was driving W on rt 149 towards Rt. 3, I noticed better lo level organization. As i pulled onto shoulder of Rt. 3 N. Observed a funnel beginning to make contact to ground. After reporting to NWS PAH. I did not get a good vid because I double clicked button lol. Anyway while dialing, it was a very mature, thin elephant trunk tornado with a power flash illuminating the enitre funnel very brilliant green. Within 3 min of develoment it became totally RFD rainwrapped and choked off. Reported on damage and if any injuries to NWS PAH. Damage survey I was invited on with Rick Shanklin revealed a High end EF-0. Apoligise for snap poor quality but its at end of lifecycle and I was alone.
