I started my chase at the So Illinois airport (which is only about 2 miles from my house) between Murphysboro and Carbondale, IL around 11:30am. A storm with strong rotation had developed near Cape Girardeau, MO and was moving NE. At the airport, I could see the rotation starting to tighten up, but no distinct wall cloud ever formed, although there were some ragged lowerings from the cloud base. This storm was now Tornado Warned. I headed NE from the airport towards Desoto, IL and heard a funnel was spotted there, but I never saw it. Farther NE, I saw a narrow funnel reach the ground briefly between Elkville and Royalton,IL. It soon roped out and dissipated. Some damage was reported in this area. I followed the storm for a while longer but never saw it produce anything else. Apparently, a new storm cell formed near NE of me near Mt. Vernon, IL and produced a larger tornado which lead to a fatality.
