12/23/09 REPORTS: TX/LA

Report, East Texas, 12/23/09

I also went hunting in East Texas on Wednesday, and intercepted a wall cloud as well as dramatic inflow tail, blinding rains, pea hail, occasional lightning and thunder and a rainbow.
The following photo shows a wall cloud that I captured between Sulphur Springs, TX and Mt. Vernon, TX around 2:30 pm.

I drove south on I-45 to the Corsicana area. A brief report w/ a few pics are here:

It was a short chase but I learned something. When you get out of the car to take pics, be sure stray wires don't follow you out. The crunch sound a BU-353 GPS puck makes when closed in a car door is not a good noise.

I was out and about this day as well. My route was similar to Kris's report. Missed the Longview tornado by 15 minutes or so, should have headed down 59 instead of 71 and I would have been able to get W on I-20 in plenty of time... live and learn. Intercepted NE of Longview but the storm was through with it's business by then. Headed on up to Jefferson, then up to Linden. Noticed the weak couplet strengthen a bit at Linden so I took a W option over nearer the storm... totally dark now so I wasn't able to make out anything where I was. When I got back to Texarkana the tornado sirens were blaring so I searched one out and set there beside it listening to it scream, going round and round. Didn't know it takes those things so long to unwind, they keep hummin and going round a long time after they quit screaming. I love this stuff. Texarkana was never in any real danger of a tornado, I guess they sound the sirens if any part of the county is under a tornado warning.
