Started off the day without big expectations. High dew points, and a good inflowing wind from the north was providing some support. Got onto the most northern storm (this is southern hemisphere) near a place called Grasmere south of Johannesburg when things started firing around 1430. The first pic shows the northernmost storm, just a large dark rain producer at this point with no real structure. Around 1530 pulled forward of it to get onto some more storms firing up ahead near De Deur. Checked radar at 1600, and the northernmost storm had now turned into a massive supercell with a 60dbz core. Swung around to try get a line on it. You could see a classic supercell appearance on the storm with a small tornado beneath it. I was 7-10 km’s away. Not as close as I would have liked. Arrived underneath the wall cloud in the final pic, but by then the tornado had disappeared. It’s funny how the day turns out when you least expect it.
