04/29/10 REPORTS: KS / NE / IA

Washington Co Kansas

Here is the Washington County wall cloud from my vantage point...almost under it. The rotation was to fast for HDR photography! I really thought it was going to produce right infront of me..but I didnt see any swirls on the ground...I stayed with it by romping down a mud road parallel to it. Through the trees, I thought I could see some dirt kicking up..not sure.

Beatrice

After following the storm up from kansas..I decided to get a room in Beatrice Neb. I knew there was more storms approaching from the South, but did not expect the sirens to start whaling as I walked towards the motel.
I snapped this picture from in town back towards the storm. I then jumped into my truck and raced North through the main core to get out of the possible tornado.
In the photo there is an interesting feature just right of the sign..it shows in all three photos I took..not sure if it is a tornado. The lowering to the farthest right looks more like it might be one. Some damage was reported from that direction..but can't confirm if this is the cause. Kem Poyner

Left Omaha around 5:30 and headed south on Hwy 50. I ended up playing intercept on Hwy 50 & Hwy 4 SW of Tecumseh, on the Kansas storms as they made their way to the NW. I observed several wall clouds, but the storms just couldn't quite get it all together, or so I thought. I shot this (very quickly & one handed) while heading west on Hwy 4 at 8:08 pm CDT. The view is looking NW into SW Johnson County near Lewiston. Since I didn't even know I had this shot, I can't say for sure it was a tornado, but it looks pretty convincing. Later, I headed back N on Hwy 50 and let what I had thought were "gusted: out storms roll over me, to get some intense lightning footage. This "gusted" out storm put down reported tornadoes in Otoe County less than an hour later. "Remember kids ... playing with tornadic storms in the dark is dangerous"
