Bio: I am from Davenport Iowa and attempt to get out to the plains once a year. Due to work commitments I’m limited as far as how much I can get out, so normally try to chase locally. I am very much someone who is still learning the ropes but chase when I can.

How did you realize your love for weather?

When I was a kid, during thunderstorms I always wanted to watch, even if it was 3 in the morning.

When did you decide you wanted to storm chase?

When I was in high school I figured when I had my own car I would go out on my own.

How long have you been actively chasing?

About 7 years, not particularly active but I go when I can.

Do you chase for a reason?

My first reason is obviously to see awesome weather, but I believe with my emergency management background I can help out if needed with an emergency response.

Do you see passion as a good or bad thing?

It can be both. Its important to have passions to make your life fulfilling, but we all know that passions can be gone after too fiercely.

Do you prefer to chase alone or with a group?

In a group. Multiple sets of eyes and ears are better than 1.

Have you ever considered going on a storm chase tour?

No.

How do you feel about the current state of storm chasing?

I feel like the reality shows brought in droves of people who normally wouldn’t have chased. I think there are a few too many people out right now which is why I stay away from big outbreak days.

Which era of chasing would you prefer to exist? Old-school or new-school?

Old school.

How far are you willing to travel for a good set up?

If on a set vacation for chasing, pretty much anywhere east of the rockies.

What are your favorite areas to chase? Least favorite?

Favorite? Illinois. Least favorite? Anywhere near a city/

What is your most memorable chase? Least memorable?

Most: 4/27/14 Nebraska, got my first and only Tornado. Least: 4/26/09 High Risk Bust

Have you ever feared for your life?

4/26 chasing at night in Oklahoma, not knowing the roads, no data, etc.

Are you afraid to make dangerous maneuvers while chasing? (I.E core punching/hook slicing/living in the bears cage)

Yes. Not as skilled.

Do you have any superstitions?

No.

Would you sacrifice a salaried job with full benefits, but only 2 weeks out of the year to chase for a paycheck to paycheck life with unlimited chasing?

No. There are other things my life besides chasing.

Are you currently doing anything job related to the weather?

Yes. I work for a major midwestern energy utility.

Have you ever been to ChaserCon?

No.

Are you more likely to hang out with other chasers while waiting for initiation, or sit alone on a country road watching the sky?

Alone or with folks I’m traveling with.

What date burns in you (think bust) and why?

4/26/09 The world was supposed to end and didn’t even get a tornado.

Do you always know why you made the wrong or right decisions to chase a particular day?

No

How did you learn what you know about forecasting and meteorology?

Online research and conversations with NWS mets and other chasers

Do you consider the day a success even if you don’t witness a tornado?

Good structure and good photos, sure

Do you feel short changed if you see a tornado from a greater distance to you than you prefer?

No.

How do you feel about the post “Storm Chaser” generation?

I feel like there are too many people trying to do this. Another reason I don’t chase with the hoards is that there seems to be quite a bit of “drama”, which I find childish and stupid.

Do you feel like the scientific community should get the same respect as emergency vehicles around storms?

Yes.

How you do you feel about the media in regards to the weather and chasing?

Overblown coverage. Local stations seem to be doing a better job getting the message out, but the big boys (TWC) overhype things.

What do you fear most about a storm?

The unknowns, lightning, etc.

What type of storm do you prefer to chase (Ugly HP/sculpted LP/classic/squall line)?

LP/classic

Do you stop your progress toward a storm for a great photography opportunity?

Sure

How do you feel about law enforcement immediately around a tornadic supercell?

Stay out of their way and try to help if possible

Should storm chasers feel more entitled to be around storms than law enforcement or locals?

No.

Do you have a job that supports storm chasing?

Not exactly.

Do you have a family that supports storm chasing?

Somewhat. Concerned about safety and financial obligations.

How long do you plan on chasing?

However its financially viable and responsible
