How did you realize your love for weather?

Dad worked with Civil Defense spotting storms and tornadic weather and Mom was net control during many a severe weather event, so it was only natural that I became interested in weather upon moving to GA.

Since 2009

Do you chase for a reason?

the love of weather, the power of nature

Do you see passion as a good or bad thing?

Passion is good

Do you prefer to chase alone or with a group?

I like chasing with a small group

Have you ever considered going on a storm chase tour?

I almost went out with Silver Lining Tours in 1999, to experience storms up close. Now I prefer to do it myself

How do you feel about the current state of storm chasing?

It is what it is…there will always be a new breed of chaser, as years go by. I am a “Twister”movie era chaser. Each year brings a new facet.

Which era of chasing would you prefer to exist? Old-school or new-school?

Old school…you worked for your passion

How far are you willing to travel for a good set up?

Drove from the Caprock of TX to SD in a 24 hr time in 2010, for an amazing set up.

What are your favorite areas to chase? Caprock of TX Least favorite?

Dixie Alley or OKC

What is you favorite type of set up to chase?

Triple point

Any “jungle chase”

What is your most memorable chase?

Ada, OK 5/21/11. Not a lot of chasers. Storms kept cycling. Went home happy. Least memorable? Every chase is memorable for some reason. Be it a bust, a success, bird-fart tornado, landspout. It all is part of the “game.”

Have you ever feared for your life?

No

Are you afraid to make dangerous maneuvers while chasing? (I.E – core punching/hook slicing/living in the bears cage)

Yes, I avoid if possible.

Do you have any superstitions?

No

Would you sacrifice a salaried job with full benefits, but only 2 weeks out of the year to chase for a paycheck to paycheck life with unlimited chasing?

No, I like feeling secure and having a job/benefits, etc.

Are you currently doing anything job related to the weather?

own KDR Media, video/photography broker

Have you ever been to ChaserCon?

Yes, since 2010

Are you more likely to hang out with other chasers while waiting for initiation, or sit alone on a country road watching the sky?

What is your favorite storm chase and why?

4/10/2009, Murfreesboro, TN EF4. Nailed the forecast, drove right to a tornado crossing I-24.

What date burns in you (think bust) and why?

5/22/10, missed the entire Bowdle, SD tornadoes by 5 to 10 minutes. Could hear Andy Gabrielson on simplex saying where the tornado was and were on the wrong side of the storm to see anything.

Do you always know why you made the wrong or right decisions to chase a particular day?

Most of the time, I learn from my mistakes and/or research what I could have done better

How did you learn what you know about forecasting and meteorology?

Taught myself, forecasting classes and learning from others by listening, watching and asking questions

Do you consider the day a success even if you don’t witness a tornado?

I like seeing tornadoes, but seeing a spinning, plated supercell is exciting and exhilarating too.

Do you feel short changed if you see a tornado from a greater distance to you than you prefer?

No, seeing one from any distance is still a gift and pure excitement

Do you feel like the scientific community should get the same respect as emergency vehicles around storms?

Yes

How you do you feel about the media in regards to the weather and chasing?

Media exploits and hypes everything. They always have, they always will.

Who are the most influential people to you out in the field?

Jon and Shawna Davies, Tim Marshall, Chuck Doswell

What type of storm do you prefer to chase? (Ugly HP/sculpted LP/classic/squall line)

Sculpted photogenic LP

Do you stop your progress toward a storm for a great photography opportunity?

Yes

How do you feel about law enforcement immediately around a tornadic supercell?

They are doing their job trying to keep people safe

Should storm chasers feel more entitled to be around storms than law enforcement or locals?

While storm chasers have the knowledge of what a storm is going to do (in most cases), law enforcement has a job to do. Locals, should just stay home and take cover and leave this to “professionals.”

Do you have a job that supports storm chasing?

Not really, I rely on my chasecations to get my fill with my full-time job

Do you have a family that supports storm chasing?

Oh no, they hate it

How long do you plan on chasing?

For as long as I am able
